Pascal Wyse on Morrissey's 'cosmic tango vibe' - The Guardian

Excerpt:

It takes a special kind of insight to see that Morrissey, the famously morose former frontman of the Smiths, is at heart a tango musician. But Argentine composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla, who is bringing his group Bajofondo Tango Club to Britain this week, asked Morrissey to sing on a track for the eight-piece band's forthcoming album. Morrissey, he says, has got that "cosmic tango vibe".

"He's doing a song I wrote a long time ago," says Santaolalla. "There is a cosmic tango spirit some artists have, even if they don't come from Buenos Aires. Tom Waits is a tango guy. Marianne Faithfull is kind of a tango girl. There's an immediacy and melancholy implicit in what they do. In certain cases, such as Nick Cave and Morrissey, there is a deep sadness related to the spirit of tango. Nelly Furtado, who is also on the record, could really be a kind of suburban girl in Buenos Aires."

Who the hell is Oscar? Oh, as in the Academy Awards. Yeah. I for one think that this is exciting news! What's with all the dumb-ass non-sequitur comments?

I for one am thrilled to see that Moz is working with new people! Nothing against the other guys, but a little shake up is good now and again. Tango? Sounds kinda interesting...

"There are timbres that are important, such as the bandoneón, double bass, violins, piano - but also the element of melancholy," says Santaolalla. "In our case, it is kind of an active melancholy. There's also power, rawness - a savage element to tango we try to keep alive. That connects to some of the primal energy rock has." As Horacio Malvicino, Piazzolla's guitarist, once said: "Just as jazz musicians must swing, tango has to have mugre, dirtiness. [A good tango] musician has to be dirty in their soul".

Sounds just right for Morrissey - I can't wait to hear this.

Only popstars and other fortunates. can afford to play them. Give it a rest Morrissey, nostalgia only goes so far and this is far enough. When my local record store feels the need to incorporate a section for the old 45's, i'll have to reconsider, til then, we can't afford to administer to the self indulgencies of certain singers. Unless you want to preclude the majority of your buying public, stick to the material of today not your hanking for yesteryear.

A friend of mine lives, eats and breathes tango, and this is what he had to say about Morrissey's new collaborator:

"Interesting the article mentions Santaolalla. He is one of my favorite composers. His music was used to great effect in the movie the motor cycle diaries. It doesn't sound like tango though. It has a more folky countryside sound. To me it conveys a sadness but also an exhilarating feeling of freedom and space that's almost spiritual. The kind where you can just take off on a motor cycle and meet the wild untamed unknown."

We'll just have to put down time till the single issues forth to sample the end result, but excitement is in the air.

      Meanwhile a tango alert -
