Ten Things You Never Knew About Morrissey - Digital Spy

3. Morrissey ditched his first name when he embarked on a serious music career. He explains: “The thing was that I was always getting called Steve. And I was never a Steve. I thought, well, I only need one name anyway. And it was such an unusual name that I thought I wouldn't ever be confused with anybody else.”

4. Where did The Smiths get their moniker? Rumour has it that Morrissey came up with "The Smiths", "Smiths Family" and "Smithdom" as a reaction against bands with pretentious names. He asked guitarist Johnny Marr to take his pick and the rest is history.

5. Morrissey took anti-depressants from the age of 17 but considers his black moods a sign of intelligence. "It's a positive thing to be," he insists. "It means that you're not a crashing bore. I mean, you don't get support groups for rugby players, do you?"

7. Morrissey was particularly miffed when a critic accused him of "conveying all the worst aspects of bestiality fused with homosexuality". He moans: “As if simply conveying basic bestiality couldn't satisfy me - but no, I had to plunge for the very worst aspects!”

"Steve"?? STEVE??? Now do I WANT Jonathan Ross to use this information and take the consequences of his actions? Well, yes I think I do. I am a horrible, horrible person, but bloody hell it would be funny! In a looking-at-the-telly-from-behind-your-fingers sort of way. With every sympathy to Morrissey, you understand. I mean, anyone less like a Steve has never, in the history of the world, been born!
