Rupa Huq on the Morrissey furore

An anonymous person writes:
Politician and academic, Rupa Huq comments on the Morrissey furore in the New Statesman.

"Morrissey’s subsequent statement is unambiguous: "Racism is beyond common sense and I believe that it has no place in our society." This and his explanation of 'Bengali In Platforms' as addressing a specific case and not all Bengalis is good enough for me to bury the hatchet.

These are the words that I’ve been waiting for since 1988 – also the year of Morrissey’s anti-Thatcher ditty Margaret on the Guillotine which provoked a police raid on his then home. For the past decade he has lived in the USA and Italy but he has not mellowed with age. Public anti-Bush remarks earned him questioning by the FBI.

Twenty years from the highpoint of my Smiths obsession, I’m hurtling towards middle age. Tellingly this whole furore illustrates how 80s pop fans are now old enough to be in command: selecting what goes into the papers and which questions are asked and picked for Dimbleby. On a more personal note this incident has made it acceptable for this Bengali to like Morrissey again - although the record, I’ve never worn platforms. "

This article is also going to be published in the leading British socialist journal, Tribune.

I never needed one to begin with... (Score:0)
but having gotten one, I don't see how what Morrissey said about the song would have comforted anyone roused to believe in his racism.

How Do Bengalis In Brick Lane feel? (Score:1)
I read this article yesterday. It's good, but it kind of 'fudges' some crucial issues. I was in London Town 'carousing' a few weeks ago, and went to Brick Lane/Petticoat Lane market on Sunday morning after a night of ridiculous excess with some old mates. Some of whom are....Bengali!
FC-UK me with a baseball bat if you must: But if you'd lived in shitty council 'housing' in Tower Hamlets for the last 20 years, dealing with piss-stinking lifts, mad racist skinheads and generally being ignored and marginalised, you'd have something to say about the influx of i-m-m-i-g-r-a-n-t-s (boo word !) into the already collapsing infrastructure of East London.

I fc-uking lived there for long enough: It was shit for people then, and it's getting worse. People of colour, whether white, black, brown or otherwise are fc-uking fuming.Rupa Huq is being somewhat disingenuous in avoiding how many of her fellow British Bengalis feel about the influx of entirely legal immigrants from Eastern Europe.

But...she doesn't even mention it. Why?

Now, I must deal with Mr Paul Heaton. Will I ever get to bed tonight? Why did I ever start this 'posting' thingy? I was having such a peaceful life....

    Kindly yours

You all add ANYTHING to the main board as "news" if it even has a slight mention of Morrissey...it's really stupid and most sane people really don't care about that garbage.

All this Hillary Duff, Fall Out Boy and other trash you post here that only mentions someone being a fan of Morrissey is also quite pointless...why? Because no one cares...

Actually, 8 of 10 of the news posts on average are quite pointless. Shouldn't you be digging trying to get someone to leak the tracklist for the Greatest Hits or find out what are the song titles for the upcoming album? You know, do some REAL work instead of just going under Google news and doing a search for "Morrissey Smiths" and posting whatever you find there?
