Morrissey Eyeing New Album, 2008 Tour - by Evie Nagy, N.Y, Billboard.com

As his marathon tour in support of the 2006 album "Ringleader of the Tormentors" winds down, Morrissey is already making plans for the future. The artist has two new releases in the works and will be back on the road early next year, according to his manager, Merck Mercuriadis.

Mercuriadis says Morrissey, who was last inked to Sanctuary, will sign a new record deal to be announced soon. A greatest hits collection with two new songs and a new studio record produced by Jerry Finn, who was behind the boards for 2004's "You Are the Quarry," are on tap for 2008.

And while Morrissey has tended to stay off the road for long periods, the upcoming break will last only a few months, given the high demand to see the man in person. "He'll be back out in January," Mercuriadis says. "We'll take a short break and then start again in March."

Launched in mid-March 2006, the "Ringleader" tour was initially set to end in the United Kingdom the following December. But from the start, the routing philosophy was to "take it to the people instead of having the people come to us," according to Mercuriadis.

"He loves to play off the beaten track," Mercuriadis says. "Playing Merrillville, Ind., is at least as important to him as playing the major markets. It's also what allows him to continue going for 18 months. Everything is a fresh experience."

Wasn't it his dream come true to be produced by Tony Visconti?, the man behind excellent records of yore and the architect behind the sound of Ringleader.

I can only expect another Finn production of plastic (virtual instrument) strings, to say nothing of those arrangements; over compressed drums and brittle low-end.

However a return to Finn isn't what I'm looking for. I realize there is a fair sized Finn supporting contingant amoung Mozzer's fan base, but don't count me amoung them. Sure Irish Blood and First were better songs than anything from the ROTT sessions, but looking at the total package I prefer the ROTT material (just an opinion, RELAX...)

If Moz must veer from Visconti (who I think was a match made in heaven I've been hoping for since Mick Ronson passed,) rather than going back to Finn and his prosessed cheese style of production why not try something new.

Nigel Godrich (as others have mentioned)
Dave Fridmanm (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev et al.)
                                                John Cale (as long rumored)
                                                Brian Eno

                                                Nick Luanay
                                                Rob Schnapf

Are just a few names that would excite me more than "Cheeze Whiz" Finn. Oh well the new songs for the most part DO sound pretty great, perhaps they can shine through the pink neon plastic production.

                                                                                    2. Finn said that Morrissey requested the "swoosh" noise on IBEH that is loathed so much around here. It's not too much of stretch to think that he had other influences on the finished sound as well. He said himself that he loved Finn's production.

                                                                                    3. Morrissey's obsession with the bland pub rock sound is the likely reason that the band is being held back. Again, Morrissey has the final say on what is offered to him. He chose to have the band write to his preconceived vocal melodies on many songs on Maladjusted, which turned out to be a complete disaster. His best albums, YA, and V&I both involved the band being given greater freedom to experiment with effects, and so on.

                                                                                    4. It doesn't matter who produces his albums. If the songs themselves are not strong in their basic form, they will likely sound weak no matter what is done to them.

Morrissey's paint by numbers compositional strategy is what has been his biggest weakness since Southpaw.

I think it's more a matter of him not really caring anymore. He started to give up control of the packaging around that time as well. It signaled a turning point in his overall interest, imo. Morrissey isn't the hardest working person in the world. He can give lip service all he wants, but the pattern is now obvious, and well, it's a shame.

He has managed to sap all of the excitement out of any upcoming releases due to a very obvious resistance to musical experimentation.

His songs now sound like they're being turned out by an overworked group of Morrissey elves.

Quarry to me is musical Toblerone (the big size): clear lines, thick, solid sound; no loose edges, two flavours, no depth. but if Finn can keep his processors/compressors at bay and just record the new songs, it might be a terrific record. i dream of a mad morrissey record, something beyond 'sweetie pie'; but the new songs are what they are and very catchy for that, and so i'm hoping for a spontaneous rock n roll album that breathes - London Calling?
