A 2 or 3 page piece overall - here's the Morrissey/Smiths segment of the interview...

Pete Doherty meets Paul McCartney - The Observer Music Month

"Pete: What about The Smiths?

SPM: Yeah, I like them. Linda was into Morrissey; they wrote to each other a lot. Big fans. I played with Johnny (Marr) a bit. It was original.

Pete: Falling guitar lines where there's no chords and you spend three weeks trying to work out what he's really playing.

SPM: You could tell it was Morrissey. It was like his paint palette...
(Pete starts singing The Smiths song 'Still Ill')
SPM: (appreciative) Have you ever covered that?

Pete: No.

SPM: It's obviously a song you love. It's in your blood.

Pete: I got it as a seven inch from a second hand shop in Nuneaton. It was on a wall, and I thought I was being clever 'cause I nicked it - but I'd only nicked the sleeve. So I had to go back and pay for the record. As soon as the guitar started I didn't even listen to the rest of it, I just wanted to play it again and again. I didn't want it to end...

SPM: The nice thing about having kids is that you get a lot of that through them. You get the next wave of musical education coming off them. Heather particularly - she's a big music buff, she went to all the shows. But for me, someone like Ray Davies and the Kinks would be like that for my generation."

And then the topic of the interview changes. hope it was of interest!

      I Was Educated at Beatles University...but... (Score:1)
I would bet just about anything that "SPM" (gag me) couldn't name 5 songs by The Smiths.

I find this extremely sad given the well-known and longtime journalistic comparisons between Morrissey/Marr and Lennon/McCartney.

Worse yet, "SPM" (gag me...again) condescends with, "Yeah, Linda liked 'em.... and Yeah, Heather was into new music..." "For me, it would be Ray Davies of the Kinks..." If Mozart had lived out the rest of his life, this would be like Mozart not knowing anything about Beethoven! That would have been ridiculous, right? Well, this is the same freaking thing. What I expect is all that I will accept: "The Smiths were every bit as good as we were," said McCartney.

So, it's true...even for a one-time pop music genius: the gravitational force that leads people to only like music that's familiar to them is real, and powerful. And lazy. And unforgivable.

Paul McCartney has contributed all that he can contribute...now he needs to fade away into the history books. Seriously. I'm embarrassed for him.

"Ummm...yeah...I think Heather really liked 'em!"

      What?????

OK, I only said that so you would read this post (so don't get all pissed at me). I was a huge Beatles fan for years.... then I heard the Smiths. To make a long story short, what I couldn't find with the Beatles I found in the Smiths and in Morrissey. In fact, I now listen to Morrissey now more than I do the Smiths. I know that's a sin to say but it's true. The Smiths were my high school and my college years (the Beatles Jr. High). These days I listen to more Morrissey. I have 3 Moz cds in my car- no Smiths and no SPM or Beatles. Looks like I've moved on a little bit from those two great bands. I still listen to both from time to time thought. In fact, I bought SPMs new cd. It was ok- the new Moz stuff is better. As if I didn't know that from the start.....
