i started listening to morrissey in the mid eighties and thank god there were no sites like this to "discuss" his habits or sexuality, or i may have spent all of my time looking at the computer. i check occasionally to find concert news and i always leave feeling more mentally healthy then when i came. so thanks

For those who honestly claim that Morrissey is straight, how can you overlook about 20+ years of evidence to the contrary? Really, I'm inclined to believe that you actually aren't familiar with most of the evidence, that you're aware pretty much of the major songs and interviews, but nothing too deep. You haven't read any books on the man or done too much investigation into what he's singing about (Clause 28, Palare, etc.). Below is just some of the evidence that I can think up OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. I'm sure there's so much more. BTW, I say all this with no judgement at all. I don't care if someone's straight, gay, or completely asexual. But let's not always default to this position that being straight is safest, that other people are gay and not MY idols.

-The covers of Smiths singles and albums, chosen by Morrissey: the Hand in Glove single, the Smiths LP picture, Candy Darling, etc.

-Morrissey stated while in the Smiths that his two most autobiographical songs were "I Want the One I can't Have" and "Stretch out and Wait." Think over these lines then: "A tough kid who sometimes swallows nails

-The James Dean fixation. Morrissey himself has said that it had nothing to do with the man's acting abilities, that it was entirely aesthetic. Who else has he admired? Jobriath! The women he's admired? Mostly old songstresses (not Barbra Streisand or Judy Garland, mind you, but not young sexpots either).

-Songs covered: I Want a Boy for Christmas, Golden Lights.

-Morrissey's own statements that he ended up visiting several gay bars in his early 20s. Some say the inspiration for "so you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own..."

-The very existence of Jake. The pictures, the fake tattooing (anyone aware of what a drawn swallow on the skin used to mean in gay subcultures?), how after Jake's departure Morrissey talked about a falling-out with someone he loved, then penning "Sunny"---look at the lyrics. Also: "I could have mentioned your name, I could have dragged you in, guilt by implication, by association, but I'll always stay true to you."

-The obsession with young roughs. As evident in I want the One I Can't Have, and of course all over Your Arsenal.

-The great interest in and knowledge of homosexual subcultures, like in Picadilly Palare.

-Other songs: He Knows I'd Love to See Him, I Just Want to See the Boy Happy, I am Hated for Loving, Christian Dior, Wide to Receive, The Boy Racer (talking about a good-looking young man, then saying defensively "I'm jealous, that's all"), Swallow on My Neck, You Have Killed Me ("nothing entered me, till you came with the key"), This Charming Man.

-His favorite Ludus song is "Breaking the Rules." He said it was beautiful how Linder could sing of "four males" coming together and acknowledgin that that is love.

-Morrissey's relationship with James Maker in their younger years. And what's Maker say about that relationship?

-And lastly, from Morrissey himself in an interview with Nick Kent: "I was always attracted to men or women who were never attracted to me. And I was never attracted to women or men who were attracted to me. So that's the problem. I've never met the right person."

Finally, someone with some intelligence on here.

Like I said before, people naively associate Morrissey's determination to not being labeled a "homosexual" as being an admission to "bisexuality," or even the always comical "heterosexuality." In reality, it's just a desire to not be labeled in any way, period.

Morrissey is a bona-fide loner. Those who aren't of this persuasion have a hard time comprehending the intensity of this mindset. Morrissey's desire to not be slotted as a "homosexual," a term that brings with it cultural connotations, as well as sexual ones, is merely an outcrop of that mindset.

Of course, constantly perceiving Morrissey as some mythic, sexual being serves two purposes for his primary fan-base:

1. Female Morrissey fans can continue to have fantasies about Morrissey, however unrealistic.

2. Heterosexual males can feel a bit more comfortable about relating so intensely to a homosexual artist.

It is my perception that most Morrissey fans are male, and female heterosexuals, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that there will be some resistance, and even outright delusion about the true nature of Morrissey's sexuality. Morrissey, himself fuels this debate as well.

Unlike other artists who display their homosexuality as a center piece, Morrissey has attracted a much more generalized, loner following that is more attracted by his aloofness, and sense of individuality than an allegiance with a homosexual movement.

Sounds like Morrissey had a nice evening: going out with a friend, having a glass of wine, being introduced to new people - & all without being bothered by fans for autographs. I´m always happy when I read stories like that. There are so many stories around about how Morrissey used to just sit alone in his hotel rooms & so on. So when I read about him having a good time it puts a smile on my face. :-)

I find it a bit sad though that the only attention this article gets is for the word "gay" appearing in it. All the sex-experts coming out of their holes again to teach the world about Morrissey´s sexuality. Why don´t we leave it to him, it´s his business alone.

Why are people discussing his sexuality in this thread? Do we really have to go through this for the umpteenth time? It's like the same anonymous comment being posted over and over again. The person merely wrote that they had seen him in Rome, whether true or not, and made no statement that could indicate he was one way or the other. Now if they had spotted him taking part in an orgy, then by all means talk about it, but I fail to see what this story has to do with his sexuality. He was with a man who happened to be gay - big deal.

I'm not taking sides here, but people should really stop stating that he is gay/straight/whatever as a fact. We don't know, we can only assume - but nobody here knows anything for a fact.

Discussing a person's sexual persuasion is apart of discussing their biography. Sexuality is likely the most important thing you could discuss when analyzing someone's personality. It says a lot about them, and it can even influence political, and social beliefs.

You two need to calm down. The discussion veered toward a sexual one when people suggested that Morrissey couldn't possibly be gay. Sometimes discussions wind their way around different subjects. It's perfectly natural.

Most of this outcry likely comes from the female contingent of the Morrissey fanbase. It has that naive, "my gay best friend will eventually fall in love with me" attitude written all over it.

I've seen this delusion expressed by fag-hags many times. They don't seem to pick up on the signs of homosexuality because they have little experience with the opposite sex. To them, gay guys are just FUN! They simply want a relationship without the sex, and gay friends serve that purpose wonderfully.

But it has to make you feel stupid when it's actually admitted by that by person.

Morrissey has never come out in his lyrics to say he is straight, bi-sexual or gay. However, he DID say he killed a nun and a horse and also that he was going to shoot his dog and then he shot himself. So if we're going to use his lyrics to claim he's on one side or the other then where does THIS leave us?
