A Singer of Suffering, Resurrected From Illness, Reaffirms His Mettle - review by By Kelefa Sanneh, NY Times

PHILADELPHIA, July 23 — It should be no big deal, right? A singer announces that he is canceling some tour dates while he tries to recover from a viral infection. Fans respond reasonably: they shrug it off, wish him well and wait until next time.

Morrissey performed a few Smiths songs in addition to ones from his solo albums at the Mann Center in Philadelphia on Monday night. But then, Morrissey isn’t just any singer: he has become one of the defining rock stars of the past few decades by virtue of his grand voice, his grander songs and his charming habit of playing with melodrama.

And suffice it to say that his fans — like the proud but self-pitying characters in his songs — aren’t exactly known for their reasonableness. After the cancellations were announced, Morrissey message boards were lit up with salvos from the disgruntled (some of whom claimed slow ticket sales were the real culprit) and the still-fairly-gruntled. One fan called Morrissey “an unprofessional bore,” adding, “It’s over between us.” A typically understated response: “Instead of psychologically enhancing him, and trying to make him feel better, you sit here and utilize mind terrorism on him. Are you all Republicans?”

Great review from the Philadelphia Inquirer on Monday night's show...

Morrissey at the Mann Center
By A.D. Amorosi
For The Inquirer

As Brit-pop's patron saint of things smartly smarmy, sexually obsessive and shyly sensitive, Morrissey - regarded as divine since he fronted the Smiths from 1982 to 1987 - has become more iconic with each solo effort.

It's odd, then, that an idol so untouchable has grown more willing than ever to engage his feverish fans.

Ed Condran explains "Morrissey worth the wait" in his review found here:

Morrissey worth the wait - phillyBurbs.com

When Morrissey capped his hour-and-25-minute set Monday night at the Mann Center for Performing Arts with “The Last of the Famous International Playboys,” he might as well have changed the words to the “The Last of the International Rock Stars.”

The former Smiths frontman may not grace magazine covers but he remains a provocative, charismatic frontman, who provides an entertainment clinic each time he steps onstage. The 48-year-old British born vocalist with the star quality was in constant motion throughout the show. Morrissey, who lives in Rome, was either dancing, making small talk with fans or evading his most ardent followers hoping to hug the proper performer.

people still thinks Moz is living in Rome.
I used to meet him mostly every day when he was here in Rome (the hotel he used to stay in is just by the shop I work for) but I haven't seen him anymore since march 06.

As far as I know (newspapers interviews mostly) he is no longer in love with the one he was with here, so why stay in Rome (yes it's great etc etc but it's not exactly the capital of r'n'roll)?

Finally, the missing word (Score:1)
Finally an article that agrees with MY perspective. And I feel no shame this time in expressing my self-centerdness (excuse me if this this word does not exist in the English language - but now it does). English is not my first language. And so, to make sure the word had nothing ambiguous or difamatory, I grab my dictionary: "mettle: strength of caracter; spirit; courage". I liked that. Morrissey has passed so many times for a very similar name - "mellow", when I felt I was one of the few ones (besides Julia and the like) that remained startled at how strong he is. He has been always defined as witty, moody, coy, bookish, funny, a diva, a fruitcake, sexy - anything except "mettle". I still keep imagining how much strength it took him to be called so many names and still keep being gracefully himself. I think everyone that has had not just a regular list of nicknames in college, but has been baptised by just about every name that shuns and casts aside, should feel it enough to know. They should know that it takes a lion heart not just to have lips mumble, "Sticks and stones...", but to actually live minute by minute by it. I am reading the first pages of De Profundis by Oscar Wilde, who let the harsh words of his capricious ex-lover brake his spirit. Maybe by the time he wrote De Profundis, he had already began his healing process. But I imagine how Morrissey might struggled, or seemed to, against a similar force, over a decade ago, two decades ago, and still continue on, all these years. It seems that most of his songs were built to aid him to survive those "wicked lies that werent't lies".

not a nostalgia act (Score:0)
i think that the article which noted that morrissey had not become a nostolgia act was making a not so hidden jab at one robert smith and "the cure" that he is always trotting out on tour. i have always maintained that the biggest difference between a morrissey show and a cure show is that a cure show is 100% about the songs from 15 plus years ago, while morrissey puts out interesting albums that people want to see live. the cure may be a bigger draw but they are more or less mike love's beach boys for the thirty something set.

Mine has gone out the window, with wings I should say. Here's a copy of my latest message to David T. Sorry if it hasn't been "proofreaded" and "edited", but I did run the spell-checker this time...

    Dear David T

This message might totally worthless, but, still, I feel I have to tell you about the chills sent down my spine when I read the horrid posts by someone who ironically names him or herself charisma. Not very long ago, it seemed that only "anonymous cowards" indulged themselves with the endless freedom of hurting and offending others. Nowadays, they don't need even to hide behind their anonymous status. I know you are in favor of anonymous because they are controversial and never dull, but if everyone just says anything without thinking about how hurtful what they are saying is, and without even thinking about it, we have a jungle of savage, irrational writers here. I know I made probably too many spelling mistakes, and that Oscar Wilde is a bit out of scope (or not; he is Morrissey's favorite writer, so...), and I will use the spell checker more often. But I feel that bad spelling, at least in my case, was all it took to see very defamatory and humiliating demonstrations of xenophobia. I have to say, with sorrow, that this not only is hurtful, horrifying even, but it vulgarizes your website and makes it a hostile and an unpleasant place to "be" in. In other websites, I see a "report abuse" option, which I feel is a way of protecting posters from being verbally abused. I feel you have to do a little more than what you have been doing in order to keep a minimum level of decency in this website. The level of coarseness in it is unbelievable sometimes. I am giving a halt with this site, hoping that you might be willing to do something about the situation I exposed. If lame comments don't hurt you, well, they hurt other people who come into your site seeking friendship and exchange of ideas. If you permit, I will be posting only under goinghome, artful dodger and anaesthesine. Even goinghome has been posting less and less, probably for lack of motivation... and he is quite motivated at times.

"Boz Burrell?" Then the dude goes on to say that Moz peaked with a rousing rendition of "National Front Disco."Sorry, but, as much as I love that song, and as stoked as I was that he was playing it on this tour, and as much as I was looking forward to it...it fell flat on it's face that night(was much better in AC the next night)

Seems to me this dude suffers form a case of "I got a press pass to the show to review it for the paper but I'm not really a fan, oh, I'll name a few songs he played so it looks like I know what I'm talking about."

I understand unbiased journalism and all, so sending an obsessed fan to review thew show may not be the best idea, but at least offer us a reporter who has some idea what the fuck he's talking about?

One of my people had informed me that my original post was thrown into -1 status so as not to be seen by certain people which was not surprising to me. What a surprise - Ha. Now I understand more why the press and other influential people come out here. I was the one who was quoted with regards to my defending Morrissey. Here: "Instead of psychologically enhancing him, and trying to make him feel better, you sit here and utilize mind terrorism on him. Are you all Republicans?" Being that my initial post was somewhat hidden or something of the sorts from what I've been told - I'd like to thank the reporter again from the NY Times who certainly got the mindsets of quote unquote Morrissey fans a thousand percent accurate.
No, nobody, nobody can contact me on the internet because not one of you people can have any e-mail that I've ever attained - I don't write to anybody through e-mails -- I have not even sent an e-mail since around 2000. Literally-none at all. I've never even sent True To You an e-mail. And why -- because, because of the fraud and people perpetrating frauds with whom were born on this website. Now go ahead and say this is off-topic which will validate my point even further. Because - it is completely on topic.
And I have Morrissey's baby blue Dolce & Gabbana which he gave to me at his first Boston show-how do you like them apples?
