Johnny Marr interview in NME

Johnny Marr interview discussed in this thread on the forums...where I also posted the full text of the interview.

Original Post by Maurice E:

It's a pretty good piece.
Marr banging on about the Smiths for about 90% of the interview. Funny how he never mentions Electronic even though he was in the band for 10 years...
A couple of indirect digs at Moz; Marr says he would never wear a tie on stage!

Talks about There is a Light and How Soon is Now quite a lot. The '6 things I'll never do' includes;
-lend a drummer my money
-reform the Smiths
-allow my music to be involved with advertising McDonalds or any meat product

On the split he says;
"In the last year of the Smiths, I was stuck with a load of ideas and nowhere to play them. So I disbanded the group."

All in all it's a pretty interesting read. Marr comes across as witty and articulate;
"I've got secrets and insights into the whole pantheon of rock'n'roll that belies a man of my tender age. And I'm pretty good with a guitar."

His favourite concert was The Smiths at Salford Uni in 1986 although he claims "I doubt we ever played a bad show".

This interview clearly displays the torment that is brewing within JM.

Did JM not say recently

" things would far easier if we could be friends"?

In this interview he talks with extreme pride , sadness and biterness.

Its time that the past is laid to rest and stop the venom and hatred towards one another.

Ok , so neither will never reform the smiths , contrary to what Andy Rourke has said that "they would all love to do it , but M will not forive Mike"

But why the hatred , surely things were not that bad whilst as a band....were they?

It is really hard as a fan for 20 years plus to constantly read the sly little remarks at one another.

Ok the court case blah blah has taken it a step further beyond repair , but Life is to short , it really is.

I love Morrissey's work , I love JM's work with the healers , and The Smiths I will love till the day I die.

Message to M and JM , enough is enough , you were friends once who both had a combined vision to make music and you can see from early TV interviews that you did like one another.

Sorry for the rant.

in interviews johnny cant get away from the smiths, he would like to talk about his current work, but time again the interviewer asks about the smiths, which this you can tell he does not like, it is a shame and like the previous post, why dont at least mozz/marr chat and enjoy the ongoing and lets face it even more popularity of the smiths than when they were together, anyhow i for one am so grateful for morrissey and j.marr for giving me the best music and lyrics that i have ever heard, goodnight and thankyou

          It's embarrassing to hear him say he disbanded the group because of that.

          Johhny has not produced anything worth of listening to since them, which makes us all be sure that Morrissey was indeed the salt in the Smiths' omelette.

          Electronic, the Pretenders, The the...most os all very mesmerizing crap. The first Electronic album did have a good 6 to 8 wonderful songs, but, hey, he was not alone. And thoe songs sound sooooo much like NEW ORDER and the pet shop boys that I actually keep wondering where Johnny came in.

          Morrissey was the heart and the soul of the Smiths. He wrote the lyrics, came up with all the vocal melodies( the most amazing thing in Smithsdom )tagged to Johnny mar's otherwise worthless music.

                                                I finally read the interview last night and, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, where has your compassion, humility and charm disappeared to?
                                                It wouldn't surprise me that, if Morrissey reads your words, he sheds a tear or two; the things you said were really quite hurtful.
                                                You criticise his hairstyle, his age, his clothes, and his songwriting ability; his omission from your list of intelligent lyricists was glaringly obvious. And making light of the courtcase that nearly killed him was doubly cruel. I've fallen out or drifted apart from a few close friends in my time, as I'm sure many on this site have, but it's a no go area to belittle and criticise them in such a personal manner.
                                                Somehow you seem to see your work with Morrissey as though you were one entity and after you left The Smiths, he no longer existed. You aren't just an extension of one another's subconscious Johnny, you and Moz both have feelings. What has he done to hurt your's that would cause you to be so vicious? Perhaps it was him turning down those millions to reform, which (if I remember correctly) you were keen to accept at the time.

                                                Obviously he won't see this, but I had to get that rant off my chest, because I hate it when people snipe for no good reason. And obviously, I'll defend my (im)perfect hero to the death. Being a fan of The Smiths and Morrissey for 8 years, I'd always given Marr the benefit of the doubt, but these comments had no other interpretation than slagging off his former friend and tainting the memory of something that was quite beautiful, namely, The Smiths.
                                                To my mind Johnny is rather like Paul McCartney, desperately clinging on to what he thinks is cool whilst riding on the back of former glories and a more revered partner. Please Johnny, retain some dignity and apologise to the fans (and Moz) who still hold you in high regard for what you did, and those who still follow what you do.

                                                Marr made his money but everyone knows that Morrissey is the STAR. So why bother? There's only so many times Manchester Evening News will interview Marr.
