methadone writes:
Muslim Council of Britain media secretary Inayat Bunglawala declared his love for The Smiths today (Saturday 9 June) on BBC Radio 4's "Guerillas of Pop" documentary. Interviewed about threats against Norwegian Muslim singer Deeyah, Bunglawala says: "I'm not a Deeyah fan. I prefer my 1980s Smiths." Asked if his favourite song is 'Girlfriend in a Burka', Bunglawala laughs and replies "no my favourite Smiths song would be 'There is a light that never goes out'".

What is it about The Smiths? (Score:1)
I knew before I opened this story that some troll would get in with a racist comment, but what I originally intended to post was just that it's interesting how a bunch of white, working-class lads from the North of the UK have such broad appeal, especially with a name so quintessentially English. There are certainly racial and cultural divides in music, but I think The Smiths blended so many types of music (e.g. motown, rock, folk) that they seem to transcend a genre, rather like The Beatles. More importantly, I think Morrissey's lyrics go beyond the music and appeal to the 'outsider' in the way poetry can. Is it just The Smiths he likes, or Mozzer's solo stuff too?

Living off the state? (Score:0)
The several million immigrants to Britain actually pay 4 times more money in tax than they receive in state benefits - so contributing to the wealth of the nation and providing funding for other matters. Just thought that I'd let you know that. If all of the immigrants suddenly left Britain, the country would simply grind to a standstill as there would be hardly anyione left to work in any service industry. Some of the comments on this thread are very frustrating and this level of ignorance led to the rise of the Nazis, so there.
