The Smiths - imminent Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction; Morrissey to snub?

The Smiths are being inducted into the US Music Hall of Fame in the near future, but friends of Morrissey have said he will snub the ceremony as he "cannot bring himself to share a stage with the other Smiths". It's likely that Marr, Rourke and Joyce will all attended showing that the court case of 1996 is now behind them and they are once again able to exist peacefully. Sadly, other people "bear more grudges than lonely high court judges".

Some things never change!

According to sky news showbiz headlines this morning, the smiths are to be honoured in the american rock n roll hall of fame next year, it says they could be on the same stage, the quotes come from the manchester evening news, and andy rourke has quoted (i dont know what may happen we may all be there for the induction or not) if this is the case they would all be expected to give a speech followed by a once in a lifetime performance... cant see morrissey letting that happen, check out sky news.

The Smiths are going to be introduced into the R & R Hall of Fame later this year. AS you know all members of the group
should be present to recieve the honour & perform. REUNION. Please ...Please ...Please"or...
Will it be cardboard cut-outs of the group & Morrissey? or Morrissey & cardboard cut-outs of Marr, Joyce, & Rourke?
Well Done Boys, You deserve it!

The rock n roll hall of fame is a way for old musicians to get their names back in the limelight so they can set up a reunion tour, be a parody of their former selves and make money off of people who can't let go of the future
Seeing the "Smiths" today would be like having sex with a sister or brother - pointless and disgusting
Morrissey - please do not join the ranks of Sting from the Police, Don Henley from the Eagles, or any of those Fleetwood Mac losers
Please do not embarass yourself and all of us who remember your band fondly and respect you

As much as I'd love to see The Smiths stand in the same room and be on speaking terms once more, I find these sort of ceremonies a little cringeworthy; backs are slapped, the fans and the sychophants cheer and then people are forced to pretend the last however many years never happened. I think Morrissey would be right to stay away; after all, how can he stand next to a person who continues to hound him for money and remind him of all the acrimony and aggro of the last 20 years?
Every so often I do wonder what it would be like to see the band performing at least one song together again, maybe as a way of saying, "we haven't forgotten what those few years meant to us, or to those who loved us".
Ultimately though, I don't blame Morrissey for holding a grudge; the split devastated him at the time, because the group was his support mechanism, and then the prolonged agony of having former friendships picked over and analysed by a cold and clinical court would've sunk him to further depths of despair. I think some people forget just how sensitive and awkward a soul Morrissey was (and probably still is) and that even the toughest person would be damaged by such humiliations; he was branded a liar in the press, he watched the people he loved taint such wonderful experiences amidst legal wrangling, and then he was hounded out of the country and had his family pursued in his stead.
Ultimately it's great that the industry is going to acknowledge The Smiths as a major part of Rock and Roll history but, as fans we already knew that they changed the world. The ceremony doesn't need the physical presence of the group to confirm it, all you need are the songs.

He SHOULD do the Hall of Fame, just to acknowledge their/his fan base. Also, what is wrong with using the Hall of Fame for PR. Nothing...it is a business and it is free PR. I don't think anyone could argue against him getting some free positive press in the U.S.

The Hall of Fame is just the Hard Rock Cafe without the bad food. Sure, it's nice that they're taking good care of Al Green's jacket, Ringo's shoes, or whatever, but what do they do for musicians themselves? Health insurance? Legal advice? If they do, their web site doesn't mention it. They do mention that they educate school children on the importance of popular culture. So, they're creating more consumers for their own industry in the same way the Dairy Farmers always tell you that milk does a body good.

If The Smiths never reunite I'm fine with it. There's something lame about reunion gigs, anyway. But if they do, I hope they do it for a real charity or just because they feel like doing it. Leave the Hall of Fame to the parade of vapid industry darlings like Def Leppard, Genesis, and the synthetic organ grinder's monkeys like New Kids On The Block. Morrissey doesn't have to prove that he can still perform, and he doesn't have to generate interest in his career. I vote NO!

Sucks to those who put down the R & R Hall of Fame! It's an honor and now that bands from the late 70 and early 80s are eligible, some groundbreaking, modern bands are being inducted as opposed to all the rock dinosaurs.
