Sanctuary Records to wind down U.S. label

NEW YORK (Billboard) - British independent music company Sanctuary Group will wind down the majority of the operations at its U.S. label this summer, according to a source within the company.

However, it will continue to run its catalog, licensing and new media operations. U.K. executives arrived in New York last Thursday and told Sanctuary Records staffers that they would cut operations by June 30, according to a source at the label.

The label will still work on current records, as well as those coming to market, like former Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan's solo debut "Are You Listening?," which is due out May 15.

"It is important to do the right things for albums like those," says one source. "But then everyone who deals with front-line will be leaving at various times over the new few months," including marketing, publicity and most sales personnel.

Meanwhile, the catalog, licensing, and new media department and certain back-office functions will remain staffed in the U.S. going forward.

The label is also home to artists such as Morrissey, Widespread Panic, Motorhead and Idlewild.

Similar to a recent move at V2 Records, Sanctuary will only continue to run its catalog and licensing operations. All affected staffers, which includes marketing, publicity and most sales personnel, will be let go by June 30th. The label will still work the albums they recently released such as Idlewild's Make Another World, as well as upcoming albums from Tegan And Sara and former Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan. The label is home to artists from Morrissey to Motorhead.

Will begin recording this August according to Alain Whyte.
  Alain also re-stated that he has written some really amazing music that he is confident Moz will very much like.

(I exchange mail with Alain every now and then and he is a really great guy).

Do Not Label Swallowneck... (Score:0)
... so by the same token do not label Morrissey!

Swallowneck couldn't give a rat's ass which label releases the new Morrissey album as he is actually more interested in whether or not Mikey Farrell will be heard tinkling the "ivories" on the tracks.

If the answer is in the affirmative, then he will sleep well tonight!

Moz releases (Score:0)
As long as he can still put out records, who cares?
The strength of sales for 'YATQ' should convince major labels that Moz still has selling power, so I really don't give a toss what label he's on. Wasn't the idea of Sanctuary that he could put out old releases? And when did he?
More Moz, I say!
