Tony Visconti speaks of Morrissey, producing next album

Unless something goes horribly amiss between now and then, looks like Morrissey is taking another stab with the Brooklyn Boy. From Wikipedia:

In a recent interview on BBC Radio 5 with Tony Visconti, the producer stated that his new project would be "the next Morrissey album", though that this would not be forthcoming for at least a year.

Thoughts? Feelings? Anxieties?

At the 'Steve Hoffman Music Forums' (a respected audiophile/music collector forum), producer Tony Visconti has been fielding questions regarding his terrific career. As a forum member there, I posed the following question:

"My question concerns working with Morrissey on 'Ringleader of the Tormentors'. What kind of mood (if any) was established when Morrissey was performing the vocals for such songs as 'Dear God, Please Help Me'? With such seemingly poignant and personal lyrics, do you actively attempt to construct a gently encouraging atmosphere, or allow someone like Morrissey to dictate what the mood of the studio is like when he records? Is any discussion entered into regarding the lyrics themselves (I assume not), or are comments restricted merely to the performance?

And, if you could spare the time, could you disclose the 'funniest' moment from those 'Ringleader' sessions? As you've noted in interviews, Morrissey has a real sense of humour. Any examples?"

Tony was very kind and responded with the following:

"Well, the mood of the studio in Rome where we recorded the album (Forum Sound Studios) was kind of Gothic. It is in the basement of a church, right next to crypts. The studio was never bright enough for my liking, there were areas that sucked in light and smelled bad. But this was a terrific place to make such an emotional album.

Morrissey was usually in a good mood being part of the band when the tracks were going down. It was nice to see him there. But when he put down vocals the band left and it was just him, myself and Marco on Pro Tools. Then the mood changed. I can never fully understand where a great artist finds the inspiration and the emotional connection that separates the men from the boys, but Morrissey would go into his private world when he was singing any song on the album. I don't want to make our private conversations before and after his vocals public, but he does ask for advice and he considers direction. It's an emotional experience for us in the control room too. Morrissey is definitely "on stage" in the studio, this is not a walk through exercise, this is the real thing when he does vocals.

I can't remember very specific funny moments, but Morrissey is very quick witted, a man of the moment. Just seeing him stand in the middle of the Italian childrens choir was a very funny sight with Morrissey looking extremely amused after the children just sang, "The father who must be killed."

From someone who's worked with him closely.

I'll be very interested to see how many comments this story gets in comparison to the Tony Wilson "Morrissey shits on everyone he works with" one.

Blame Rome.... (Score:0)
You must realize it's the quality of the songwriting which was poor and not the production. Who are you gonna blame for mediocre songs, Jesse Tobias or Tony Visconti ?

Nothing against Jesse, he did his best and came up with a few hooks, but Morrissey could work with almost anyone. Why these (occasionally inspired) hacks?

It's like a little prayer, ringing loudly
with beautiful melodies. So I think melodies
come first. There should be many styles!
Time will change but I like the music, classic
but everylasting.
Listen and try many ideas, Morrissey.
People are so nice.

if you want massive sales, just do the following :

enlarge your sound (you tried it with You Are The Quarry but you need to go much further)

Since I am a big fan of anythings gothics, I'd love to have shrunk myself to the size of an insect (or at least a bat) and have witnessed Morrissey's transcendence. It could have been filmed, but I think that the fact of having it recorded with Morrissey's knowlegde would have broken the spontaneity of those moments. So that's why I'd like to have been a bat... :)

Alain Whyte In Regards To New Moz Songs.... (Score:2, Informative)
I recently had a mail exchange with Alain Whyte, asking him about his place with Morrissey. I complimented him on his career and asked about a possible return to the band (in place of the incredibly lame songwriter Jesse Tobias). This was Alain's response:

"Things are strange sometimes things happen and they are meant to be who knows. Obviously I miss the good ole days. If it is any consilation I have written 23 tunes for Morrissey since Oct 3rd last year and worked on other projects. I will do my best to get my tunes on the next record as I think I am on fire at the moment. I think he will be blown away. I am still writing so in a way I am still in the band so don't fret". Alain

I returned a quick mail and told him to make sure He plays on the next release (not Jesse) and be the main guitarist on any possible follow up tour and Alain replied:

"I will be there in studio unless I am told otherwise but that I feel would be foolish ha ha!!!" Alain

This is excellent news. i think Toni Visconti & Morrissey have a good working relationship and ROTT is many, many leagues superior to YATQ. It is tighter, more cohesive, more ambitious and basically, more enjoyable and a far more rewarding play. ROTT will go down in history as the most undeservedly maligned album of his career. Yamaha

There are parts of ROTT that are just amazing, sublime and wonderful and in others somewhat majestic and uplifting.

There were also parts of YATQ that were amazing too and at the time that YATQ was released, it was one of the greatest albums that had been released througout that entire year. ROTT was also one of the best albums last year but both offer totally different muscial styles and arrangements. Both:

contain some amazing production and arrangements,

have Morrissey at his best for many years -eclipsing the majority of his early works and earlier works by The Smiths,

demonstrate Morrissey is more than capabable of giving us yet more torment throughout 2007 and beyond.
