"Morrissey would love to sing Gilbert & Sullivan": Tony Visconti on BBC Radio 5

Requiescant Inpacce writes:
Morrissey was mentioned several times today in an interview with Tony Visconti on Simon Mayo's show on BBC Radio 5. Visconti was on the show to talk about his career and his new book 'Bowie, Bolan And The Brooklyn Boy'.

During a conversation about Visconti's work with Sparks, Visconti spoke of a demo of Sparks' song 'Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth' that he and his wife of the time, Mary Hopkins, recorded. He explained that Russel Mael really liked the track, and that Morrissey adores the track so much, he plays it in the intro to his shows.
Mayo remarked that Ron and Russel Mael are like a modern day Gilbert & Sullivan and suggested that Visconti should produce a musical based on Gilbert & Sullivan, claiming that Morrissey sounded like an ideal interpreter of their songs. Visconti: "Oh that's a wonderful idea. Morrissey would love to sing Gilbert & Sullivan. I must put it to him next time I meet him".

Mayo asked why Visconti only ever seemed to work with one-off geniuses; Visconti:"Because...there is only one Morrissey, one Bowie, one Bolan, one Phil Lynott...they all have very individual styles and unique visions".

As Mayo wrapped up the interview he asked Visconti what was next on the cards; Visconti:"Next? A new Morrissey album...but, I feel that wont happen this year".

Oh well.....

The Trepidation Of Swallowneck (Score:0)
My good ol' pal Swallowneck has just returned from a visit to the bathroom and was not pleased to be informed of Visconti's news here - he believes a Morrissey album should consist of 12 original titles, not a half-assed cover version!

I think I agree...

    Will be Glad To... (Score:0)
I will be glad to work with Morrissey on an album this year. I'll let my boss know I'll be out a bit and someone will have to be designated to play on the internet and listen to i-tunes in my place.

    As producer:

    * Guitars - I plan to go guitar heavy, possibly bring in Jimmy Page. Picture Moz standing there waiting while Jimmy goes off on a double neck.

    * Lyrics - Striclty no kegs between legs but plenty of references to large breasts and death.

    * Drums - Tommy Lee, banging and competing for attention. Hitting the gong with that huge...

    * Songs - Double album with DVD of live material and nude interviews plus bonus: Two concert tickets to 2008 county by county US tour. (5 nights in Atlanta)

    * Duet - Moz and Bette Midler covering Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name Of. Bjork humming wistfully in the background.

    * Cover Art - Moz and Condaleeza embracing in swimsuits on the beach in Ibiza and sharing a chocolate shake (two crazy straws).

Done properly and well produced, expect Moz at halftime for Superbowl 42!

    Super Producer,

Visconti is lined up to produce the next release? Well that sucks.
It just means more bloated, outdated production value.
This guy is a complete relic and completely out of touch in terms of producing.
Throw in Jesse Tobias and we're once again.... Doomed.

Well, just reading the words "A new Morrissey album..." from a trustful source made my week.
I liked Vinconti's production values, ROTT is one of my favourites, but i really wish Alain gives a bigger contribution this time around.
If the record is not for 2007, we can assume it will be recorded next year, and possibly released in late 2008, early 2009.... Morrissey will be 50 by then. Would that be his final album? Likely.

Visconti producing - I think he gave ROTT a rich, textured sheen.

But, please, dispense with Jesse and restrict Alain and Boz to writing one or two songs. Morrissey needs to reclaim his pop crown with some inspired backing music.

          Won't happen, of course.

          Visconti... (Score:1)
I'm sorry, but the production on ROTT is lousy. It sounds thin, tinny, and irritating. Mick Ronson did this type of rockier production to perfection on Your Arsenal, but Visconti blew it. Some complained about Jerry Finn's sleek production, but after ROTT, I would LOVE to hear another Finn-produced Moz album. I mean, the Quarry B-sides were even amazing sounding.
As far as the songwriters go, Alain is still really good. Jesse's songs were weak. Boz apparantly doesn't have any more Jack the Ripper's left in him, sadly. I thought Mikey Farrell showed potential. I'd like to see someone new come aboard to help Alain out.
