Morrissey in talks for Eurovision - BBC News

Former Smiths singer Morrissey could represent the UK at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest, the BBC has confirmed.
The Mancunian musician first expressed an interest in taking part after Daz Sampson's song, Teenage Life, came fifth from last in the 2006 contest.

"I was horrified but not surprised to see the UK fail," he said. "Why didn't they ask me?"

The BBC says it is in talks with the singer to write and possibly perform a track for this year's contest in May.

lifebegins also writes:
According to the UK's biggest selling daily newspaper, The Sun, Morrissey is in secret talks to write (though not necessarily perform) the United Kingdom's entry in the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

Morrissey is in for Eurovision - The Sun Online

scottishlass also writes:
I was quite pleased when I read the reports this morning about Morrissey in negotiations to write the Eurovision song contest tune!

"British singer MORRISSEY is in talks to write the UK entry for the Eurovision Song Contest later this year (07).
The former SMITHS frontman is a fan of the critically-panned competition.
A BBC spokesman says, "I can confirm we are in talks with Morrissey about a Eurovision song." Last year (06), Morrissey expressed his disgust at the UK's song, performed by DAZ SAMPSON.
He said, "I was horrified but not surprised to see the UK fail again.
"There's a question I keep asking myself - why didn't they ask me? That keeps going round my head."

I've been reading about this all day. It'll never happen - the British public wont vote for him in the selection show, but it'd be amazing if it did happen. (Deep breaths)

All I've been hearing today is "Miserable Icon" "Pope of Mope" "Depressing Pop Star" "Gloomy Genuis" The public in general really don't get Morrissey at all.
I think Morrissey is witty, funny and charismatic - when will the world ever learn!

I think he will enter the selection process but the public will veto him in favour of an "airhead" of some description. Unless of course they are seeking new credibility and a higher standard of song.

I also am sure though that the general (and false) opnions of Morrissey by the public will quash this as a non-starter.

I hope it happens though - it feels right!

basically if every moz fan in every country votes he stands a fair chance..

Morrisseys should ask to by pass the intial voting selection.

        This part worried me:

'Although it is unlikely that he would perform the song if an agreement is reached'

Can anyone on here honestly see him writing a song for someone else to perform. As sure as I am about the talent of people such as Daz Sampson, I feel Morrissey believes that only himself can truely convey the passion and intensity of his lyrics.

Morrissey will present his terms (whatever they are) and the BBC will have to either accept them or decline them, I don't think he's the sort to negotiate!

While this news feels like a bit of a shock it really shouldn’t since we know about Morrissey’s childhood immersion in the Eurovision contests, and about the videos and pre-show songs during the ROTT tour. Even though he is consistent, true to himself, ‘the same underneath’, how and when he tackles hacknied themes is always revealing as he frames them in a blinding new light. His tastes might sometimes seem obscure and precious, but he proves over and over that on the streets he ran, and that he hasn’t ever lost touch with his grounding in the quotidian, the minutiae of everyday life, or with the popular pulse.

In answer to a question about how he writes lyrics on 14 December 2005, he explained:

“Usually the melody comes first and then the words jump in, but before either I must have a certain feeling and a certain incentive in order to make both the voice and the words sound true. Luckily, for me, I'm always unstoppably driven. It must end soon - for all our sakes ...”

For all our sakes, it must NOT end. He was voted England's 2nd great living icon recently so there would be plenty of supportive fingers on buzzers. Mike-thrashing amidst snowdrops and daffodils, is the world ready to be spellbound by Euro-Moz?!

I really don't think Morrissey would do it, perform especially, maybe write a song, but even then, doubtful. If he does do it, I think he would win it. For all the haters out there, think of his fan-base. They are feverish devouted and will vote in their droves. Also, as a respectable artist, i'm sure things would be done to favour Morrissey. It would be massive news in the music press all over Europe. I'm sure katrina and the waves celebrity help them win some extra votes etc

If you're a Morrissey fan, you should know about his obsession about Euro-vision anyway. He has already written for a past euro-vision contestant - Sandie Shaw with Please help the Cause of Loneliness (Shaw comeback? Probably not since I heard they have fallen out a long time ago) - so is it really so strange?

I can't see it however. He made those comments last year at a gig I attend (can't remember which venue now) and I'm sure it was as tongue in cheek as when he 'demands' a knighthood. I think sometimes people misunderstand his very dry sense of humour.

Why do you think that Morrissey did the Festivals? He hates them, but he did them because it was a new audience. Eurovision would be the same. As long as he is happy with what he has written, who cares?

I think that all these comments are from "Younger fans", as anyone who knew The Smiths, and Morrissey at the time would know that he did everything. You couldn't watch a television programme, switch on the radio, open a newpaper - without seeing him. He wasn't bothered, it was all about exposure and reaching new audiences (on a tv quiz, talking to a puppet or on a daytime chatshow - he wasn't that fussy.)

This is Morrissey being the Morrissey soem of us can remember.

                                    Who initiated the story?
                                    Who is being directly quoted?
What actual facts are being communicated?

So we can conclude from this story that the BBC need some publicity for Eurovision. Morrissey made a few comments last year about it. He is the most high profile celebrity they can use to get the publicity. They contact his management. They issue a press release. It's from the BBC so every other news agency repeats it.
