No, our Moz did not win, but to us he will always be our top living icon.

I've just heard from a very reliable source that David Attenburgh has won the BBC Culture Show Living Icons Poll - with Morrissey coming 2nd. All the various ways of voting more than once - has counted against us I'm afraid.

Results offically announced on the Culture Show on BBC 2 this coming Saturday 16th December.

I've just been to the Culture show pages and saw the comments there for and against Morrissey. It appeared to me that the nasty ill-informed agression against Morrissey aupporters there is quite similar to the nasty ill-informed comments we get here against Morrissey from those who feel the need to, for whatever reason.

I'm pleased in a way he came second. Being a "cultural Icon" to me is too close to being absorbed into the mainstream and if anything is to define Morrissey, it's that he resists mediocrity and the easy path of celebrity appeal.

Iconic status, in my opinion, is not only about popularity but also about being something that, whether you love or hate it, cannot be ingored and has a cultural significance beyond the genre in which the person operates.

Morrissey provokes, and I hope he continues to in the days where dissent is being stifled, spomtaneous protest criminalised, and the mass of popular music merely the opium of the people...

At the end of the day, Life On Earth vs Life Is A Pigsty? It's a no-brainer.

Well done Sir David. Hard luck Sir Macca. And you, Mr Morrissey, were lucky to get second.

          Culture icon? Bah humbug! (Score:1)
Has anyone else spotted the blatantly obvious about the winner of this poll?

David Attenborough is a 'wild life' icon; not a cultural one. It is his brother Richard who should be near the top of the poll for his great achievements as a screen actor and film director over the past sixty years. I just fail to see how 'Fattenborough', as Moz calls David, ended up in this poll

This is a typically British fudge; mixing the apples and oranges as per usual.

Observing a lion and her cubs with a BBC film crew from fifty paces away on an arid African landscape maybe great televisual viewing - it is hardly the zenith of cultural endeavour a la McCartney and Morrissey who are both bona fide songwriters and musicians. Men of the Arts as it were.

In this respect, as the runner up, it is Morrissey who is the true icon of British culture!

Well, it would have been wonderful if Morrissey had won this, but it would have also been odd as Moz is rather used to (and enjoys) being the underdog. I can't stand McCartney, so I am thrilled that Moz was second and, as far as I'm concerned, he is a living Icon anyway. He doesn't need an award for that, just our adoration!

From 1965 to 1969 Attenborough was Controller of BBC2. Among the programmes he commissioned during this time were Match of the Day, Civilisation, The Ascent of Man, The Likely Lads, Not Only... But Also, Man Alive, Masterclass, The Old Grey Whistle Test and The Money Programme. He also initiated televised snooker. This diversity of programme types reflects Attenborough's belief that BBC2's output should be as varied as possible. In 1967, under his watch, BBC2 became the first television channel in the United Kingdom to broadcast in colour.

Didn't some band in the 80's do quite well from Whistle Test?

PS Attenborough also has a dinosaur named after him. True!
