(not official) The Smiths Box Set tracklist
...
expected release date: February 2007

source not confirmed yet. i've received an email from an australian mate. he assume to have read this info on a Kula Shaker forum. maybe someone Alonza Beavan (former bassist for Johnny Marr's The Healers) related?

if it's true the bad news is: nothing previously unreleased :(

if true, then the boxset is just effectively the albums bolstered with bonus tracks? Some good stuff (rare-ish radio sessions), but far from the treasure trove it could have been (e.g mix of superelative live takes, rare studio mixes, missing radio sessions) and pales in comparison to the Fall box. Shame really.

To me it's no surprise if this tracklist becomes reality. Its supposed to be a boxset, not a rarities collection.

Don't get me wrong - we all know alternate takes, the Troy Tate version of The Smiths and i'd prefer those to be on the CDs compared to boxed set of songs i already have several times.

But Warner, despite being not too sensitive asking for Morrissey's input in the past, have done a fair job since 1992: They released all the original albums and the two Best... compilations, the 3 singles ranked higher in the charts than any other Smiths 7" before! (1992, the year Madness and ABBA did also release their best selling albums ever: compilations Divine Madness and ABBA Gold. Warner did see the signs of time and presented the legacy of The Smiths very well).

The Singles (1995) was a good collection (especially for starters) but ok, The Very Best Of The Smiths (2001) was a marketing brainchild and not, let say, a work of art.

But despite this one, there are no cheap compilations designed for the bargain-bin released by Warner, sold at a reduced price from the day of it's release - there are many companies here in Europe (i bet its the same in the US) like Disky who buy a licence and compile cheap looking, cheap sounding, cheap selling compilations. Warner did not grant such a licence up to now.

The Smiths Box Set may be just a collection of every previously released song. Disc 5 at last seems to be worth the buy, remember that in pre-internet days most of you would have given a monthly salary to buy a muddy bootleg of those sessions..

I hope that The Smiths Rarities will become an own disc or set of discs in the future

He's already said that for every bit of Smiths merchandise bought in the UK, the profits go to Mike Joyce (I'm not sure whether Marr or Rourke get a look in). I know some of you may think he's stirring, but it's true; the profits of Smiths merchandise probably only cover the interest on the sum that Morrissey was originally ordered to pay Joyce; he must owe him about a gazillion quid by now and if he ever comes back to live in the UK, the bailiffs will be straight round to collect it. It's a very sorry state of affairs when the fans want to get their hands on rarities and the like, but the only people profitting will be the record company and the drummer. Though I suspect not a lot will be bothered about whose are coffers swelling. 'Paint A Vulgar Picture' was written with remarkable foresight.
