Morrissey's rare visit worth the trip - Chicago Sun-Times

November 22, 2006
BY JIM DeROGATIS Pop Music Critic

From the promoters to the legions of faithful, gladiola-bearing fans, no one was quite sure why Morrissey was playing his only U.S. show this fall at a sold-out Aragon Ballroom on Tuesday night.

Gary?!? (Score:1)
One rumor held that the brief defection of his bass player derailed other U.S. gigs until next spring.

What is this line all about?

Hate to bash a good review, but he's never liked Morrissey, or the Smiths and has not one original thing to say about them, not one insight. I was at the show and did not see one person holding a gladiola. And by the way, I Changed My Plea to Guilty is only a "Viva Hate" nugget if you live in Albania. Do your homework.

Is this a good review? (Score:0)
I really don't think this is that great of a review. 'Pigsty' and 'Dear God' were great live but you have to be a true fan to enjoy the songs. Also, Morrissey played Chicago because it's a bad-ass town. Chicago has always been good to Morrissey and the Smiths and Moz was just returning the gift- IMO. Great show, mate!

An overall positive review. However, his slam of ROTT and the songs he performed from that album live was unjustified. Especially since one of the songs he cites as a highlight of the show, "a splendidly swirling and psychedelic 'I Will See You in Far-off Places'" is the opener on ROTT. That's just sloppy journalism.
