Brandon Flowers on Morrissey and Manchester

StephenD writes:
In an interview with Nick Kent,in The Guardian,
(October 20th) Brandon Flowers discusses his relationship with Morrissey, Manchester and all things English:

The Killers, after all, are deeply ambitious and media-savvy enough to know how the process of selling records in the new millennium tends to work, though Flowers is worried that the time devoted to promotion and gargantuan touring schedules means there's little chance he'll ever be as prolific as his heroes once were. "The Smiths released two albums a year, plus singles and fresh B-sides - that's just incredible to me," he laments.

One minute they were the toast of the London live circuit, the next they were playing in gargantuan stadiums opening for - and on occasion even duetting with - Bono and U2. But all those celebrity meetings can be rather meaningless. "They're always so brief," grumbles bassist Stoermer. "And you never have much to say to each other." For his part, Flowers - who positively idolises Morrissey and supported him in concert two years ago - reckons he got closer to his hero when he was serving him as a busboy in a Las Vegas restaurant back in 2002.

Flowers' greatest dream-come-true to date, then, has not been achieving stardom, but the Killers' early conquest of the UK. "Our first trip to England was so great. The magic soon wore off a little bit but it was still unforgettable: playing the same clubs in London as Oasis when they started, going around Manchester visiting all the Smiths' sites.

"When I was growing up in Las Vegas, England just seemed so far away: a genuine fantasy-land. There was something untouchable about the music - larger than life. It was so different from what the Americans were growing up with. And it became irresistible to try to emulate, even down to adopting an English accent when you sang. But this time around I wanted my singing voice to sound like the way I actually talk. I didn't do that on the first album; I was so used to singing along with Morrissey records in the car, I couldn't stop myself from adopting an English way of expressing my lyrics, even though I'd never even been to Manchester back then. This time I wanted to sound more like someone who comes from the Mojave desert, which is where I'm actually from."

To the poster above: What the hell do you think Morrissey does?

Morrissey is probably the most critically flippant, and dour pop star on the planet. He's known for trashing almost anyone, especially those who seem poised steal his cult market share.

Seriously, this place is like a twilight zone. It should be included in the DSM for its stereotypical cult mindset.

Some of what you say is true about Morrissey... He's critical and flippant, yes... But I really don't think it's motivated by jealousy. I think he's just brutally honest about how he feels. He's been that way all his life - long before he was even famous. He had wanted to be a pop journalist as a teen and I think it's still in him to criticize most everything in life.

He's a lot of things, but I really don't think that he's the kind of person who would knock someone down just because he felt threatened. He has too much integrity for that sort of thing.

Speaking of the DSM, don't you think it's a little bit... something... when you come to a website that's set up for the sole purpose of keeping an eye on our idol, Morrissey, and then criticizing us for loving him? What purpose does that serve? Let us keep our illusions. They make us happy.

Seriously? Some of you people just take life a little seriously. I think the Killers are a fun band - their music is catchy and cool. I really don't care that the lead singer is a Mormon or anything else. Personally - I think voting for George Bush is a mistake, but it doesn't change my opinion of their music. I do think that the fact that he admires Morrissey is a fantastic thing, and may even gain Moz some new fans. Just because you don't like the Killers does not mean that they can't like Morrissey. It's clear from everything I have seen and heard that Brandon Flowers genuinally loves Moz. Doesn't that make him one of us?

Get over yourselves. Morrissey probably wouldn't give you the time of day anyway.

And Duran Duran were and still are a fun band. Again. Get over yourselves!

I saw them outside of the Tower Theater in Philly before the Morrissey show in 2004. They were playing a sold-out show across town later that night. Ronnie the drummer made a call and got me and my bro on the guest list. They make great tunes and are pretty cool to their fans.
