The Dears like “Marvin Gaye fronting the Smiths”

Amongst the clips shown on the video-c showcase this week, The Dears are featured with their new single “Ticket to Immortality”. The publicity script accompanying this says that they have been described by the NME as "Marvin Gaye fronting The Smiths while the London Philharmonic Orchestra has a stab at the Burt Bacharach songbook". They have admitted their indebtedness to Morrissey as an influence before; they have supported him a couple of times already, and will again be amongst his special guests at the upcoming Marley Park concert in Dublin on 22nd August.

Further information, and the video clip, is available here.

but Marvin Gaye? No, no, no, no, no...

I hope the new album is good. I've heard one track which I didn't like so far.

People like their motown round here!

It does seem that The Dears are in the ascendant and deserve to be; they have soul and rhythm, and they've paid their dues.

I've had a promo of the new Dears album for a few months now, and it's great, great stuff. It's less orchestral and abit more concise and rocky than their previous outings, but the songwriting is staggering.

Personally, I think the Smiths comparisons are vey lazy. Sure, Murray Lightburn is a big fan of Morrissey, but his lyrics and voice are quite different, and musically there's little similarity. And the Marvin Gaye comparisons? Come on! I love The Dears AND Marvin Gaye, but I can't see any comparison, other than that they're both black.
