Johnny Marr joins Modest Mouse

taken from rollingstone.com rock daily:

We’ve known for a while that Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock and former Smiths guitarist/genius Johnny Marr were collaborating on MM’s next record. But guess what? Marr is now officially a full-on member of Modest Mouse, Brock recently told us. According to Brock, Marr’s membership is so unequivocal, he will tour with MM in support of their next record, tentatively titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and tentatively due this fall. “He made a cautious commitment to write and record with us, and then the tighter we got, he was like, ‘okay, let’s tour too,’” Brock said. “Then he was pretty much a member of the band - not pretty much. He’s a full blown member of the band. It’s really fuckin’ nice.”

Some backstory: When it came time to start work on the follow-up to 2004’s indie-rock marvel Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Brock found himself sans guitarist and enlisted Marr to help write and record. “I took a long shot really,” says Brock. “I was like, ‘You know, I really like that guy’s guitar playing. There’s no chance in hell he’s going to say yes, but why not give him a call?’ So I did.” Maybe Morrissey should borrow Brock’s little black book? “Eventually it all came together, and it was a really good fit, which I think actually surprised all of us,” Brock recalled. Finally, Marr, Brock and co. went down to Sweet Tea studios in Mississippi (the same joint where Good News was recorded) to lay down tracks for We Were Dead, which Brock describes as a nautical balalaika carnival romp. So what’s the gist? Get ready to have your mind blown by Modest Marr’s crazy-dark sailors-and-gypsies whimsy.

So it looks like Johnny Marr will be selling more records than Morrissey by jumping on to Modest Mouse's success....is this going to make morrissey further try to please a mass market? i hope not. Morrissey is at his best when he simply does what he does best (and obviously what is on the radio sucks). the radio and mtv will never get it and see it as too risky.

Either way, interesting to hear what they'll come out with. Modest mouse may have been a one album wonder. it's common among these hipster bands. i think it is. I don't, i'm not a hipster, or a hippie.

What's sad is watching so many presumably young Morrissey fans on here go through the exact same narrow minded process that I went through as a teenager listening to the man. The dismissive attitude toward anything that does not fit into the Morrissey paradigm is nothing short of cliche.

The term "cult follosing" is often applied tongue in cheek, but when it comes to Morrissey fans, it's literal. The "drink the Kool-Aid" mentality is not cool or anything remotely resembling any kind of individuality. The irony seems to be lost on many. Fortunately, I grew out of it, but it's still an embarrassing period to look back on.

I actually did not get into much of MM's back catalogue, but I did find their last album to be rather creative. In fact, the first time that I heard "Float On," I thought, Johnny Marr could have written that. The funk riff, along with the very witty and articulate hooks reminded me of his style of playing. Therefore, when I read that he was to be interacting with the band, it made perfect sense.

In short, the irony of the criticism against Marr's creative choices is striking when you consider that the man has clearly achieved somehting that many on here have not, and likely never will: Fulfillment

On a sidenote, I have found Morrissey fans in person, and particularly on the internet to be generally bitter, humorless, and not even remotely intellectual. In a certain sense, they are performing bland impersonations of Morrissey's overall character. The superficial interest in emotional impulses, and tabloid style quips is what seems to dominate.

In a way, it's as if Morrissey has given his fans a license to be insufferable assholes.

Clealry not all Morrissey influences have been positive ones.

When I first heard "Float On" I thought the jangly guitar style sounded just like something Marr would have written in his prime. I only discovered MM with this last record and there are some GREAT songs on that record--most notably "The Good Times Are Killing Me." Johnny Marr has always been a musically restless spirit anyway and seems to thrive when he hooks up with different people. I like that.

'Float On' is an undeniably great song (better than anything Morrissey has done in years) 'The Ocean Breathes Salty' is a great song also. I don't know who produced "Good News" but I love the sound of the album. Much better than the mess Tony Visconti did on ROTT. Good for Johnny, Modest Mouse is a much better situation than The The, The Pretenders, Electronic, Bryan Ferry, Neil Young, and The Healers. This is a awesome for him. Isaac Brock is the real deal.
