Stuart's Diary - JULY 31ST, 2006

Excerpt:

I lay back and listened to the interview which was called “My Top 10”. I remember listening to this series in the eighties. I think it was on a Saturday afternoon. I can’t remember hearing the Morrissey one before. In 1984 I would have perhaps listened, uncommitted, if I stumbled over it.

I remember hearing the programme with Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran; a few years after it must have been. I was amazed that he chose a Cocteau Twins song. He chose a track called Little Spacey from the Victorialand album. I remember being infinitely annoyed when the interviewer just called the track “Victorialand” as if he couldn’t be bothered to lean over and read the label on the record to see what the song was called. (I’m listening to the song right now. If I veer off into the impenetrable for a second or so it’s because of the aural tickle that I feel.)

Well, I liked listening to Morrissey. He was so talkative; passionate about his small world. Affable even. His choice of music was good; I particularly liked the Sandy Posey track that he chose. So there I am listening to Morrissey talking about how The Smiths will never play another festival, I’m listening to the Cocteau Twins, I’m thinking that when I get back to Scotland I might try and get a job in the Holiday Camp that I used to work in.

who writes a good pop song now? (Score:1)
I listened to it, and didn't he talk! I could barely keep up with the flow of opinion and in-depth knowledge.

A lot of choices from the sixties. The question arises again, who does write good pop songs nowadays that will stand the test of time?

My only immediate answer is Nick Cave, lyrics, music and subject matter - peerless in his field.

And is pop music worn out and in need of reinvention, something totally new?

Or am I getting old in a way I always dreaded and swore to end it all if I got into such a sorry state?

Or has time granted me a more discerning pair of ears?

Or shall I put an axe through the radio , pick up a guitar and try to do better myself...

And Klaus Nomi- a name I'd read but never experienced! Stunned I was..

Think I'll go listen to it again
