No wonder most radio stations ignored it and even those who have heard it on Radio 2 have clearly not gone out to buy the album.
Conversely, First of the Gang re-ignited You are the Quarry sending it back into the top 20 of the album chart.
A sucessful Moz album simply needs to have three of four utterly brilliant songs. Although many of you will disagree, Ringleader only has a handful of quite good ones.

I enjoyed it live, and it's not a terrible song, but at the end of the day, it's a Moz chug-by-numbers, and from Southpaw onwards they've been ten-a-penny. If the likes of Radio 1 have shat on such songs in the past, there's nothing in the track to persuade them to change their minds. It's okay, but little more than that. Neutral music fans need something better than that track to convince them to part with their money.

Plus, a Morrissey single needs a quiet week of new releases to do well. With the country going mad about the World Cup, and several dozen footie-related songs hitting the shelves, it was an absolutely terrible decision to schedule the single release for last week.

Alongside his album tracks and singles, he even sings Ganglord and Song from under the floorboards live, in a misguided hope that if the crowds enjoy the songs enough they will buy the "Youngest" single - both of which they adorn - and hopefully help him get his first number one. What happens? The shows get bootlegged to death and virtually nobody buys the single - despite it being one of his best in ages (when taking into account the b-sides) Why can't people just buy the new material like real fans should? Even in expensive old Britain both CDs are only £5 for the two! That's the price of a pint of beer in London!

You'll probably just burn a copy from your friends when and if it ever gets released - if you have any. Second thoughts, you've probably dowloaded the studio version of the b-sides already anyway.

Absolute disgrace the lot of you! You've taken the joy out of the Top 40!

If the Mozzer was a man, he would have release Pigsty as a single (it would have not been a commercial suicide, cause it would have receive no less airplay than Youngest).

Having said that, I though the YHKM b-sides were pretty average (and pretty awful in the case of Human Being). The B-sides for The Youngest...are fantastic! OK, the Magazine cover is so-so, but Ganglord, as we all know, is ace, and much better than when he played it live.

"If you don't like me, don't look at me" is an instant classic b-side, though. I love the vocals, the lyrics, the runaway-train acoustic strumming...Its one of the best Moz/Tobias tunes thus far, and on a par with any of the Quarry b-sides (though perhaps not quite the Maldjusted ones).

Come on people... it doesn't seem sensible to judge a song's merit on its chart placing. Does the fact that TYWTML reached 14 mean anything? If so, then what? What if it reached 13? What if it was released at a time when there were no World Cup songs and reached the top ten? Does that change the song or how you feel about it?

This song has a very atmospheric beginning with foreign “polis” sirens blaring. One wonders what has happened and where they are; any number of images could be conjured up. A football match? A car chase? The “Italian Job”? A slightly sinister, echo-saturated bass takes over for a few seconds while the siren fades out before the whole band kick in. It doesn’t take long before we discover what the sirens are about. Murder. “And he turned into a killer,” sings Morrissey, as he narrates the story of the “Youngest”.

                                                  “Forget-me-not eyes
That cried if we ever left his side.”

Lyrically, although certainly not musically, it is reminiscent of “Used to be a Sweet Boy”.

“Holding so tight to Daddy’s hand,
But that was all in some distant land.”

However, where UTBASB has the feel of the autobiographical, TYWTML is third person fictional narrative.

Incidentally, anyone who attaches importance to the fact that there are 13 songs which sold more than Morrissey this week might wish to scan them to see if they contain a line more poetic, evocative and authentic than the one above. If, as one Philistine commented, people didn’t buy this song because it said nothing to them about their life, then these people are too stupid, blind and deaf to understand beauty when they encounter it. It may not say anything about “their” life; no, it merely enlightens us about an aspect of life, parenthood, and how filial relationships can end up, unintentionally, with murderous consequences.

Morrissey builds this character utterly convincingly:

                                                  “A lopsided grin,
Strained to keep the shyness in.”

To use a children’s choir singing on a song about a cherubic child is a brilliant use of dramatic irony. When one thinks of the choristers dressed for High Mass, in their cassocks and surpluses, they remind one of little angels, rather like the youngest, “the cherub”. They are like little cherubs, he was a cherub, and we all know what can happen to little cherubs, don’t we?

“With a lovely wife beside him.”

Was this his victim? Why mention her if not?

So, lyrically, the song is everything that we expect from Morrissey: thought-provoking, remarkably authentic, poetically satisfying and with a dash of humour (the choir).

Musically, it is fairly unremarkable, but not without merit: a pretty solid verse, a decent, catchy chorus. Personally, I don’t much care for the last 30-or-so seconds of Morrissey’s vocal performance; I feel it detracts rather than adds, but this is just my opinion – someone will probably say now that this is their favourite part of the song.

There have been comparisons with “First of The Gang To Die”. Without getting bogged down, I think that lyrically they are of similar quality, but for me, Youngest is the better (again, just my feeling). Musically, FOTGTD was instantly catchy and thus maintained a long chart run (7 weeks, Morrissey’s longest), but like all instantly catchy tunes, after the initial “play it to death” period, it needs experiencing in small doses.

Anyway, a good song, a memorable lyric, a couple of decent b-sides. What’s to complain about?

I, for one, am not surprised if the British record-buying public once again display their appalling taste by ignoring genius and embracing worthlessness.

                                                  It was ever thus.

Having checked Morrissey’s myspace blog, I noticed many ‘friends’ requesting more music on it. As it was used for the last single and album, it did seem a little odd that The Youngest…wasn’t added. However, I discovered a possible reason why not. Billy Bragg, who refers to Morrissey regularly, has removed all music from his myspace site, and his people posted the following information there a couple of weeks ago -http://www.myspace.com/billybragg - which might be of interest to others innocently hawking their wares on the net:

“Someone who we work with was bright enough to read the small print of the MySpace terms and conditions and found that once an artist posts up any content (including songs), it then belongs to My Space (AKA Rupert Murdoch) and they can do what they want with it, throughout the world without paying the artist. Because of this we've had to take all of Billy's songs down. I'm working on getting small clips put up instead, but in the meantime please visit www.billybragg.com to listen to and download songs.

Below is the offending clause. We are hoping to start a small revolution (in true Bragg style) to try and put a stop to this. You can do your bit by posting out a bulletin to all your friends, esp artists, and badgering Tom with e-mails letting him know how unfair this clause is (not least because you can't hear Billy on here anymore!).

Thanks for your help and support. The amazing thing about My Space is how fast we can all communicate so if we all do our bit we should be able to change this.
