Radio 1 reacts to Morrissey's comments - NME.com

The station deny they are ageist

Radio 1 has responded to Morrissey's suggestion that the radio station is ageist.

The singer made the comments on Tuesday night (April 18) on the opening night of his tour in support of his album 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors' in Greater Manchester.

However, speaking to NME.COM today a spokesperson for Radio 1 said: "We don't decide what we will play based on the artists age, but we look at whether the track is something our listeners would be into. Colin (Murray) and Edith (Bowman) have actually played the track."

A recent Number One, 'Ringleader Of The Tormentors has provided Morrissey with his third solo album chart-topper.

a young rival recently said of LL Cool J, "who wants to see a 45 year old rapper?" When LL was on The View (abc) last week, he was introduced with the comment "here is one artist coming out of the 1980s who we still love to see take his shirt off on stage..." Of course, as I was watching, I was thinking of Morrissey. to me he is the artist most worthy of claiming that distinction.

LL (who is a Smith, by the way) said that his dreams have no deadline, no expiration date. he said he planned to continue making music as long as he felt inspired to do so, or something like that.

Amen, I love that Morrissey is also living by that same credo. Long may it last.

Everything he says blows out of proportion in the thick-as-shit media. Arctic Monkeys, Radio 1, U2...the list is endless. People should remember that it's (partly) Morrissey's sense of humour to say things like that. He has always made sarcastic/humouristic/witty comments on current stuff.

Radio 1 have a policy on artists rather than songs (Score:1, Interesting)
some radio stations will decide on a song's merits. Virgin played First of the Gang to death but have hardly played any other Moz singles. fair enough if you ask me. Radio 2 have a similar approach. But R1 won't pay Moz at all. It's ironic considering that Kaiser Chiefs' singer named You are the Quarry as the best album of 2004, and so many other huge bands bang on about Moz.

Somewhat bizarrely, the most support Radio 1's ever given Moz was in the mid to late 90's. Rubbish like Roys Kean and Dagenham Dave even made their a-list, and now that he's actually releasing good stuff again, they've decided against playing his records!
