"So this must be Salford" says Morrissey. "its exactly like the Willows in here - and we're the star turn."

In fact, it's the Lowry Arts centre - a venue which is a stone's throw from both his Stretford beginnings and the legendary Salford Lads Club which lends itself to one of his most famous photographs with his former band, The Smiths.

Hard to believe that this is a tour to mark his eighth solo album, Ringleader of the Tormentors, his first for nearly two years, which topped the first official british album chart to include downloads, when it was released at the beginning of the month.

Even so he opened with First of the gang to die, a hit from the number seven album, you are the quarry and the LP which has restored his status of late. It is followed by Still ill - a smiths song - which is then followed by You have killed me, from tormentors. It sounds depressing but it was far from it.

His voice is as strong as ever - heaven knows he's middle aged now but he's still fantastic and adored in equal measure. And as ever there is a little controversy.

Having sung his new single The Youngest was the most loved he says "Radio One have already said they won't play this and do you know why? Because the head of music at Radio One said Morrissey was born in 1959 and the furthest back we'll go back is 1971 which means i'm too old" "the rule does not apply to U2 or Madonna who are both older than me but so what"

This is the ninth venue in a 37 venue tour which started in Gothenburg on April 1st. He plays at the Apollo, Opera House and Bridgewater Hall on May 6, 7 and 8. However, anyone who hasn't already got a ticket is out of luck, as tickets for his entire 38 date british tour sold out within 20 mins. But anyone who does get to see him is sure to see a hatful of hits.

Ringleader of the Tormentors?
