Morrissey interview by Paul Morley in Uncut (May 2006) - out tomorrow, previewed today

naomi writes:
Paul Morley will interview Morrissey for the next issue of Uncut, published in the UK tomorrow. The magazine cover is previewed in today's NME - a heavily airbrushed Moz-as-Madonna - and some excerpts from the interview have found their way into dailies.

The papers have led on a few choice remarks on about Kate n' Pete, but Moz also talks about Posh n' Becks, Tony n' Cherie and being snubbed by Eric Cantona. He also says ""I would rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian."

Some bitchy highlights from an upcoming interview for Uncut magazine feature in today's Manchester Evening News (following ROTT's 4 out of 5 review in the same paper)

Moz blames Kate for state of Pete

Moz slags of the Blairs, Prince Charles, Keith Richards, Eric Cantona, Pete Doherty, Kate Moss, and the other members of The Smiths. He has a nice word for Ronnie Corbett though. Great fun.

I can't imagine what would have happened had they stayed together much longer. She might have tempted him into wearing fur.

Morrissey does need to be careful though - the shortcomings of his lacklustre band often means he leaves himself wide open to retaliation. M needs to consider new collaborators. (And yes, VaI and YA are fantastic - but now it's twelve years on).

Ok, so, I’ve had some wine…so, here goes…this is my first time posting. I must say, I truly miss the old Mozz...I've followed him since the early 80's, and I just think he's lost his flair, his finesse. The validation he's seeking at this point is thick and embarrassing. It’s simply just boring and sad really. There's no mystery to him anymore, nothing left to ponder. Perhaps he’s too exposed for my tastes…I dunno. I suppose that it’s only natural for any human being…but, David T, aren’t you at least not as interested anymore? If so, what’s the appeal…Why do you continue to run your site? I mean, we’ve always been curious what he’ll do next, but honestly, that’s not even as promising anymore. Admittedly, I’ve been a voyeur I suppose as eagerly as you’ve been a website host (if you will), so we’ve no excuse for letting on, do we? Morrissey is not the same anymore you have to admit. I don’t mean to generate the typical, “Yeah, but what do you expect…he’s just getting older” response…the fact is, quite plainly speaking he’s a regurgitation of himself in all respects.

When I buy a new album, read an interview, whatever, I don't feel the goose bumps or ocular fixation I used to. There was a time, and most traditional fans would agree, when you couldn't believe what he could do to a set a speakers or an empty room. You were totally enveloped. But, Mozz is just...well, I guess old, and not as inspiring. That’s what happens I guess. I think we’re all hoping for an album that is somehow nostalgic and tangential somehow to anything else we hear, but it really never is. It’s re-used material with a slightly different take that we hyperbolize beyond reality, because we want it to be the best.

Yes, the band is old, but even the subtle hope of a Smiths reformation has always been only that…a hope. But it’s clearly the last thing on his mind, or any of the rest of them...it’s a squashed possibility. I think Mozz has outgrown who he really could have been...almost was, maybe was…don’t know really. It's like the climax that never quite reached the top. I can’t figure at this point if it’s either disturbing to witness this heartbreaking metamorphosis or if it’s natural and expected, that I should still listen and applaud, even though I cringe at the shallowness and lack of depth in every note and lyric when I compare it to the “then”. Either way, I sure do miss the Smiths and the young, vivacious, creative, uninhibited Morrissey who could lyrically and vocally clear the floor for anyone as aspiring. I feel very little in the passion department for this latest offering, and a few prior to...I'm so sorry to admit. I think there will always be a part of Morrissey that remains with me, but I’m pretty much done expecting a blast-to-the-past moment of bliss from him. He’ll always maintain an unbelievable niche in my life, but there’s only so much he can do. I think he’s just past the prime of his contribution to innovation in music, or he needs a serious reality-check to reinvigorate his prospects. Now, he just drones as expected. I’m just not interested in the next note…how sad.

By the way, for the opposition…I’m no great big spokesperson here…hardly…I’m merely expressing that I miss what Morrissey meant to the world of music, and to me personally, in my opinion. I think that we’ve seen the best he will ever be. I hope that in my lifetime there will be another of such greatness.

                    (pardon the grammar…Merlot…)

I'm finding certain things alarming, and this after having religiously followed Morrissey's art for the last 22 years.

The single. It is nothing special. Indeed, I find it dull, pedestrian and unoriginal in the extreme - the guitar plucking before the first verse kicks in is taken from Southpaw Grammar. Those with ears will know from where.

The b-side. "Good Looking Man About Town". Play this alongside "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby". The central two-chord riff and melody are too similar for my liking.

The lack of wit. "I would rather eat my testicles". This is crassly stupid. Morrissey's interviews, of which I have an extensive collection in several boxes upstairs dating back to 1983, used to be peppered with wit, scathing irony and marvellous humour. And the intelligence of the man. Such articulacy. And now? Now he thinks it okay to slate the other Smiths mercilessly. (My belief is that without the other Smiths Morrissey would never have got out of his bedsit - they were teenagers when he had already long-since missed the boat, only to be recruited into Johnny Marr's band).

Am I the only one who is concerned at thinking the album may have lines which are equally embarrassing as...

                      "Explosive kegs between my legs".

After the disappointment of YATQ, this does not bode well.

It' so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes guts to be gentle and kind.
