Tom Cruise pitches a fit, Morrissey turns down major cash, and new hope for dirty willies
Saturday, March 25, 2006

...Morrissey and Marr broke up The Smiths in 1987, at Marr’s request says Morrissey. There are nasty rumors flitting about that some of the breakup revolved around sexual tension between the two, but Morrissey has never said he’s gay.

Morrissey, who has a new album out next month, is constantly dodging the question. With song lyrics making clear references to homo love and personal idols including Oscar Wilde, is it any wonder journalists keep asking? ...

I doubt Morrissey forced Marr to a zone where he was clearly never meant to go.

Why would the rumours be 'nasty'? Because they're about being gay? And 'hommo love'? What kind of phrase is that? Fucking narrow-minded Texan bastards. I doubt there is any truth in these 'rumours' anyway.

first off, it's no one's business what the true nature of their relationship was, but theirs. they don't have to speak to the public about it. that said, here's my take on the Morrissey-Marr dynamic. this is only the opinion of one demented fan:

Morrissey and Johnny shared a previous incarnation together, in which JM was a man, Moz was a woman. when they were working together in this lifetime as the Smiths, they were not consciously aware of their past, but the lingering emotions and desires from their previous relationship were still there. in the form of smoldering desire, on Moz's part. A feeling of confusion on JM's part, as he oscilatted wildly in a tortured game of attraction-repulsion, under the spell of Moz's magnetic voice and stare.

yes, you can call that sexual tension. I had a similar relationship with a man in this lifetime. We had been two gay men together in a past life--British sailors together on a sinking ship (literally and metaphoricaly). In this current lifetime, when we met up again, my desire was still there for him, but I was without the necessary implements, being a hetero woman this time around, and he once again a "gay" man. the lingering desire on my part was unquenchable but I no longer had the body to satisfy his physical needs. it's like the way some of Moz's female fans feel about him now: we have a hard-on for Mr. Morrissey, but lack the necessary means to execute it.

This is complete rubbish. It is common knowledge - all around the world - that Johnny was trying to move into another direction with his musicianship. To this day, I really do not know if he has got there (yet) but it is nice that he is continuing to try.

This is from the GQ interview last September.

GQ: “Were you in love with Johnny Marr?”
M: “Sexually? Absolutely not. There was a love and it was mutual and equal but it wasn’t physical or sexual. There are lots of people post-Smiths who would like to make some dramatic homosexual story. There never was one. It’s often said that Johnny rescued me but he was also bobbing about in his own lifeboat.”

GQ: “Was ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ written about your relationship?”
              M: “It wasn’t and it isn’t.”

There were many differences involved when one looks at why the Smiths broke up. Sexuality was clearly *not* one of the problems.

Morrissey may, in fact, make references to gay themes- but he also makes equal references to hetereosexuality. SO what is the big deal?

              I'm glad I don't live in Texas.

I believe they had enough tension musically-wise with Morrissey limiting the band to a really basic concept and Johnny Marr with the will to explore other sound textures... There was enough tension related to their lack of appropiate management (maybe due to sexual tension). But blaming the split just on sexual tension is absolutely bollocks... I mean, it could've been a factor, but not the main one.
