As usual, the NME sets the scene by mention Madstock (can't they let it go now?)and the topics of conversation are similar to as they were two years ago. Wish they could interview Morrissey along with the band. I doubt the second part is going to be anymore revealing.

Being a long time Moz/Smiths that is only 13 months Morrissey's junior, I have to say that he is ageing very gracefull as I hope to do as well. He does depend on dyes, wigs, bowtox, face-liFTS {see Elton, Bowie, Weller, etc] or any other crap that usually goes with the celebrity/star status. Not only is Morrissey true to you, his fans and his music, but he is also true to himself. And quite frankly he looks much more sexier as well.
Watch out Moz when you come to the East Coast in the US, because I will be waiting in the wings to ask you if "you will be my guest for a drink or two and some good eats after the show". I will take to you the best place that caters to vegetarians in Massachusetts." Like fine wines, he keeps getting better looking with age. Ouch!!!

It starts off pretty well; NME describe the new album as 'thumpingly brilliant' containing 'piston-hard pop uppercuts' (You Have Killed Me, In The Future), doomy thunderstorm atmospherics resembling 'The Teachers Are Afraid' (but with a proper tune!) and 'military marching songs' (At last I am born: 'undoubtedly Morrissey's most positive song ever'). The album is his most musically daring since Your Arsenal.

However, the interview then descends into a bit of a monologue about animal rights violence covering the same old same old. We're promised stuff on terrorism, Elton John and homosexuality next week.
Oh, other good bits include some interesting views on life in Rome and the admission that he has become friends with Chris Eubank!

Just bought it- a fairly interesting read (and nice pictures!) but really, I cannot understand the sort of people who seem to be prepared to sacrifice their lives for a gerbil. Just a few bones to pick with 'Il Mozalini'(sounds like the name of a cheese. Mozzarella + fettucini)-

'The life of that animal is just as important to that animal as your life is to you...'

I disagree. Other animals are far less self-aware than humans, quite clearly. The only reason that they strive so hard to survive is because it is their instinct, not rational thinking. Also, it's almost like Moz is saying that if he had a choice whose life was to be sacrificed, he would not really be bothered whether it was his mother or his pet dog. Obviously I may be reading his words wrong here, but it annoys me when people try to say that humans are equal to other animals. No other species has 'intelligence and morality' like us (which Moz points out that we do have). No other species has built an empire like we have.

And supporting animal rights violence? Such extreme opinions surely make people more likely to not respect you and your opinions, to try and do just the opposite to spite you. People will not listen if you use such uncivilised tactics.

Having said all of that, I agree with Moz that all animal testing is wrong- he brings up an excellent point:

'And why use animals for human research?'

Past results have shown that this is a stupid thing to do (ie. thalidomide). Animals are not the same as humans, you cannot expect the same outcome! And the drug industry generally does not look for a complete cure, they try to find treatments that people have to keep taking because the greedy bastards want money!

I wasted the night by seeing them at Spaceland. What a waste. Theyre a bunch of pimple faced kids, literaly, to me all the songs sound the same. Theres no swagger to Alex (the singer) and the rest of the band are boring aswell. Theres just no excitment. If I go to a show I wanna be thrilled, with them I kept looking at the guitar players setlist to see how many more songs Ive have to endur. I didnt wanna walk out during the set, as I was literally 1ft away from the guitarist, Jamie "Cookie"
So in other words AVOID. The Subways, now theres a band.

THey're not the future of music mind (only so much you can do with a four piece guitar structure) but lyrically spot on and they have an energy about them that few other possess

I predict that Gil n Tonic will change her mind as they become the next Oasis.

the lyrics are third-rate; it's amazing that people rave about them. clumsy sixth-form poetry at best ('scantily clad beneath the clear night sky': cringe!).

singer sings in his native accent which is a good thing but he's got a horrible singing voice. really thin and aggressive.

all in all, the music might be great (only heard two songs) but if the singer's voice isn't your cup of tea, steer clear.
