The New Rock Classics - San Francisco Chronicle

Excerpt:

The Smiths, "Hatful of Hollow" (1984) Stephen Morrissey and Johnny Marr were a formidable team in the early '80s. This album is one hit after another. While every song may seem simple and similar on the surface, on close listening, depth prevails both musically and lyrically. "How Soon Is Now?" is the standout among many.

Man thats what Ive been on. I find that album to superb. Yes, indeed it is HIT after HIT! Their young and raw. Which is what every band should be. That when its good to be into a band. The minute the they get the cover of the wretched NME it's all over.
Even the cover of the album is great. Makes a smashing Tshirt to boot.

Puts me in mind of the nights spent listening to John Peel under the duvet (well it was a school night!!) with my fingers poised on the PLAY button and the red RECORD button hoping to produce a vaguely audiable recording without waking my parents.

Hi. You included several of my favorite albums on your "New Rock Classics" list from Feb. 19. It feels great - liberating - to hear someone say that Kraftwerk outdid Pink Floyd and that a Prince album is better than Sgt. Pepper's. I think you're right; The Smiths and Joy Division are certainly more relevant to young, modern musicians than Dylan and Zeppelin are. Of course, at 28 that makes me feel really old. I don't want The Smiths to be The Stones. The Stones are O-L-D!

I say down with the sacred cows, and I only hope my favorites aren't next in line at the slaughterhouse.

On an occasion of this kind it becomes more than a moral duty to speak one's mind. It becomes a pleasure. -O.W.
