eBay touting problems - article in the Observer (Feb 12)

There's an article about the e-bay ticket situation, with particular reference to the Morrissey tour, in today's Observer. I don't think I agree with the writer that prices will continue their "upward trajectory between now and May" and he couldn't resist the usual song reference, but it is of interest. Included is a link to an "Ethical ticket Exchange" site.

Not sold out yet, although there is already one tout who has 8 tickets (the maximum) and - desperately, I hope - tries to sell them for 65 euro (face value 39).

Some British people (the maddest fans ;-) ) might improve the atmozphere in Amsterdam, please come!

I'm wondering whether to try to get a ticket off eBay as I'm still gutted about not getting a ticket to see Morrissey on my birthday.

But quite apart from the price and the ethics, what's worrying me is that there's someone on there at the moment offering 2 tickets for row E and 2 for row G, but she's already sold AT LEAST 14 tickets for rows E, F and G of the stalls, meaning she had a minimum of 18 very good tickets.

How can this happen? Does she work for See Tickets or similar and these tickets were never put on sale and just given to staff members/friends to sell and make a profit on?

Or do you think it's a con and the tickets will never be sent and/or will be counterfeits?

    Any advice would be appreciated...

    bottom line.

In the US it started with sporting events when going to a game was more about "being seen" than actually seeing the game. The truest fans have been left out in the cold for quite some time now.

Personally, I would be very surprised if the scalping/touting laws were ever enforced. I have noticed on many e-bay auctions that the sellers will say something to the extent of "...the face value of the tickets is $20, anything paid over that price is for a souvenir leaflet I am including in this auction"...and the souvenir leaflet will be something like directions to the show.

We ought to complain about the constant use of this title. I know Morrissey started it by using the pun in the first place; but at the time, it sounded original. What it didn't do was denote the lazy assumption that The Smiths / Moz and their fans were depressed / depressing.
If I read one more article with it in, I may just storm the offices of these newspapers and ram The Smiths back catalogue down their throats. Then we'll see who's depressed.* Anybody would think it's the only song they ever did.
As for the touts, any media coverage is appreciated, but it will take a lot of legislation, paperwork and discussion to pass any bills through parliament, or to secure any sort of legal judgement against multiple ticket sales on bidding websites. However, what should be investigated is how the ticket companies and venues operate; I'm convinced there's some dodgy dealing going on prior to the sale dates.

n.b. The title of this post is ironic ... can I have a job at The Guardian?
