Kathryn Bailey, Toronto writes:
The highlight of last night's CBC-broadcast Canadian election coverage occurred when Steven Page (of Barenaked Ladies fame) credited The Smiths and Billy Bragg as partially influencing him to rally behind the New Democratic Party (NDP).

...that our Moz was such a force in Canadian politics? This isn't the first time they've been connected--throughout the campaign, Tyrone Warner, a writer for Canadian Television's website [ctv.ca], has been publishing pieces describing the election through music. When he got to week five, he chose all Morrissey songs to illustrate his points. See the piece at Campaign Soundtrack [electionblog.ctv.ca].

SP is a really cool guy. I used to go to a lot of BNL shows in 96-98 and got to know them pretty well. I saw Steve several times in record stores and hung out with him during the Violent Femmes set at Trinity College. He was big into indie rock and has continually cited the Smtihs and Bragg as influences. BNL performed "Still Ill" quite well back in their early days. BNL may not be the coolest band going right now, but the guys are top notch and hardly the "frat boys" some poster labelled them!
