UK comedian Stewart Lee on Morrissey

Tottenham Tom writes:
In this morning's edition of the British free daily commuter newspaper The Metro (Dec 12th), the British comedian Stewart Lee included a track by Morrissey in his choice of six tracks for the regular "On My Ipod" feature.

Amongst his choices was "I Have Forgiven Jesus" and he writes:-

"In my new stand-up set, I talk about what it's like to be accused of blasphemy, due to my involvement with Jerry Springer: The Opera. So I play this as the outro to the show. The song's asking, why would God give us desires and imagination and an intellect and then punish us for using them? Everyone used to think of Morrissey as being really miserable but the lyrics to this are hilarious. I think his latest album is as good as anything The Smiths ever did."

There is also a small photo of Morrissey with the article. I must add that Stewart Lee has always struck me as being a very Morrissey-esque figure stylistically. His obvious love of Morrissey certainly isn't a surprise to me.

I read that article, too. ( the photo did it for me). I am glad that there are "public" people who understand, or start comprehending, the witticism of the genius who is THE MOZ.

"I Have Forgiven Jesus" is one of the best, most complex songs that Morrissey has ever penned. He sings it like his life depends on it.

    More please, Moz - Amen.

"Like a prayer" was another song like that. But it failed in what "I Have Forgiven Jessus" succeeded: to question the foundations of religion-induced morality. I cannot help noticing Morrissey's desdain for most pop music singers, even Sting, who in my opinion is very good, with "Sister Moon" or his "Tea in the Sahara" stuff. But while the emotional intensity of most singers to me is level 7, Moz's level is most of the times 10. "I Have Forgiven Jesus" shows that. I see more than one famous figure declaring love for this song. Craig also made Moz sing it in his late night show, as you all know, if you bought that deluxe YATQ cd. Because of Moz, I'm thinking about asking Santa for an ipod for Christmas too! (And maybe a nun's outfit, like the one Moz's players were wearing in the picture. Sorry, this post of mine is being silly, I just woke up. But it's interesting that an ipod works as an eliminator of the least best songs, like our private top of the charts, and how Moz gets to be in it and beat VH1 and Co.
