"On the streets I ran": could be another First of the Gang, or a song about jogging!

Dear God Please Help Me--a moz parody?

The album has been produced quickly on the heels of a major success; it's is supposed to have a harder sound, despite (or in line with?) Morrissey calling it "beautiful"; the song titles are a lot more immediate, less cryptic; it seems more autobiographical.

Southpaw is one of Morrissey's own favourite albums -- this record could continue that threaad, much to the chagrin of many fans here (not me).

Or it could be completely different!

I'm not saying it's likely to be a reference or anything - Bloc Party are hardly (!) the first people to use a phrase like that, but I was immediately reminded of them when I read that title.

Or, one could say that 'Out of Time' brought national/worldwide attention to a band which otherwise captivated only a distinct following.

I'm a quite big R.E.M. fan, so your post naturally caught my eye. However, I'm not really sure I understand what you're saying. Yes, Out of Time was R.E.M.'s huge break, but what is the parallel between that album and Ringleader of the Tormentors?

All we know about Ringleader is the album title, the track names, who's worked on the album, a few details like the children's choir, and so on. Isn't it a bit early to say it's going to be anything like Out of Time? Or that it will have the cultural impact of Out of Time?

Sure, I believe that Ringleader could be Morrissey's greatest album yet (though I also don't believe Out of Time is R.E.M.'s greatest - being great and being popular are not the same thing). But, I also believe Ringleader could be Morrissey's worst album. For me, at least, there's no way to tell.

One thing that might be worth noting about Out of Time is that R.E.M. specifically tried to make it a 'niche' album after the huge success of Green and the subsequent stadium tour; they didn't want to become an arena-rock band. Regarding Losing My Religion, there's that famous quote from Peter Buck, something like, 'It was 1991, we were listening to the radio and thinking, hmmm? Does it seem like a song with, say, a MANDOLIN would get major radio play? It certainly didn't seem to fit with what was popular at the time, so I decided to play a mandolin. And what did we get? Our biggest hit ever! From then on we just threw up our hands.'

So, although this isn't my personal view, I suppose we COULD speculate that after the much-lauded Quarry tour, Morrissey decided to make a more 'personal' album, aimed at a smaller fanbase. Titles like 'To Me You Are a Work of Art' and 'At Last I Am Born' are certainly less expansive than 'America Is Not the World' and 'Irish Blood, English Heart,' though overall I have to say I don't see a huge amount of difference in the Ringleader titles v the Quarry titles (and again, titles are one of the only things we've got to go on, at this point). Morrissey has described the album as 'gentle,' and Out of Time is assuredly one of R.E.M.'s most 'gentle' albums too. And after this current era of Franz/etc angular disco, maybe the pop world will crave a turn toward gentility, just like it did in 1991? Maybe it will. But maybe it won't.

So, while making all these thought-somersaults regarding R.E.M. and Morrissey has been extremely pleasing for me (thus, thank you for posting!), I still don't see what you see, Ken S. Would you care to extrapolate?

And he'll probably make a turn of phrase or just a clever lyric that will make me think each now dull-sounding title is brilliant.

And 'The Father Who Must Be Killed' ... Damn Moz, you're a Freudian dream.

However, I have to agree with some on here who think some of the titles sound a bit, well, childish. But, then again, we're divorcing the them from the (as yet unheard) songs. I bet the exec who first looked at e.g. 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me', thought 'bloody hell, he's surpassed himself with self-pity this time'. But, as ever, when you hear it, it's glorious.

My only criticism would be that the album title and song titles are a bit verbose. But then he's always lived by the mantra, why use one word when ten will do. And who am I to criticise.

Anyways may your new year be full of self-loathing, self-deprecation and (by the looks of it) murdering relatives whilst wallowing in a pigsty ... I can't wait.

After all, none of them stand out in the vein of 'November Spawned A Monster' or 'The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores' or 'There's A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends'. But, then, on re-reading, I think I much prefer these to the titles of YATQ. For a start, none of them sound political, and since 'America Is Not The World' and 'Margaret On The Guillotine' are among his worst, I think that's a good thing. Secondly, none seem to be about judges or court cases, though, as in 'I Like You', he may well throw the odd reference in. To wit, I have a good feeling that this may well be a more personal, reflective album along the lines of the superlative Vauxhall. One poster says Mozs it at his strongest in times of acclaim, and I kind of agree, except for he did follow the luscious Vauxhall with the dirgey Southpaw. So I will reserve judgement. But I am hopeful!
