In 1997, the Smoking Popes toured nationally as an opener for another act who regularly hears the praise of a fervent flock: Morrissey (who had gushed about "Born to Quit" that July on KROQ in Los Angeles: "I bought the album, and I just thought it was extraordinary -- the most lovable thing I'd heard for years. I think he has a great voice. Are they big here?"). The Popes and Morrissey's new band were both units marrying driving, buzzsaw guitars to lyrics that are quite clever though often hastily judged by their surface melancholy.

Josh, the Moz -- one ticket, two tortured romantics. And both can croon cream into butter.

I really liked this Smoking Popes song from the movie "Clueless". Perhaps a bit pre Interpol post Joy Division. Whatever, I'd probably go see them live if I had the chance.

Both The Smoking Popes and Duvall are great bands and if you haven't had a chance to hear them, they are highly recommended. Josh is a fantastic songwriter and one of the few that I would place in the league of a Morrissey. The praise Morrissey heaped upon The Smoking Popes was certainly well deserved and made even more significant by the fact that up until that time Morrissey had rarely gushed about any band that had been formed after 1980 and probably rightly so...songwriters like Moz and Josh are rare finds indeed. It's great to know that both of them will be releasing new material in the near future!

i went last night, it was amazing. they played more songs than i can remember, and left the sold out crowd wanting more. best show i've seen in years.....period.
