Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel - Pitchfork review

Excerpt:

If you've caught any advance word on Playing the Angel, you'll probably have heard the same rumors that swirl around all band-adulthood records: That this is the one, the "return to form." That this isn't just the "best since Violator," but maybe even just as good. That they're about to pull off the same trick Morrissey did-- following the same path as always, and yet somehow getting everyone to sit up again and take notice. (Publicists help.) And while I wish I could take some bold, controversial true/false stance on that one, this album just won't let me. If you really are the sort of person who's been waiting with bated breath for a new Depeche Mode release, then don't worry: You'll love this. Dear everyone else: It's pretty okay...

It seems rather obvious that... (Score:1)
after an artist or a band has been around for a few decades, people are not buying their records to discover something new. They are paying homage to a performer or a band they love.

Sometimes, love is deaf. Luckily, in Moz's case, he really does reward the listener with a voice and a persona that continue to fascinate and beguile.

    'Playing The Angel'... (Score:1)
is a bad album. at certain points its good, sometimes bordering on quite good, but for the most part it is horrendously bad. ive never seen such a bad album receive such relatively- and most often overwhlmingly- high praise. ive read several reviews of the record and its averaging about 4 out of five stars. pitchfork gavit 7/10 if iremember correctly and ive only seen one review giving the appropriate mark of 2/5 (though, for the wrong reasons).

the best on this album ('A Pain I'm Used To," "John The Revelator," "Suffer Well," "Precious") does not come anywhere near to the best found on the previous two albums, 'Ultra' and 'Exciter', and the worst ("Macro," "Nothing's Impossible," "Damaged People," "Lilian," "The Darkest Star") is far worse than the worst of those albums as well. its nowhere near 'Violator', which isnt even their best album ('Songs Of Faith And Devotion' is).

iknow this is morrissey-solo, but ijuste had to vent on this one.
