Robbie Williams/Morrissey Comparison (Observer Music Monthly)

Benton writes:
From The Observer Music monthly

"Since leaving Take That, Williams has released eight albums. Judging by the audience reaction to his new material at the Astoria show, the ninth will satisfy his vast constituency of fans, but it also represents a maturation of his talents just as he looks backwards. With Stephen Duffy, formerly of the Lilac Time, he has fashioned a poppier update of the sound of his great heroes the Smiths. The echoes of Morrissey are all over the songs 'The Trouble With Me' and 'Your Gay Friend' and the shadows of drizzly bus shelters in the north west in the 1980s haunt the record - at times, you can actually sing Smiths songs over the top of the tunes ('Girlfriend in a Coma' fits perfectly with 'Spread Your Wings')."

No matter how hard he tries. Robbie will never really "get it".

He's a light entertainer in the mould of Tommy Steele and he'll never be more than that.

He can try Morrissey's clothes on, but they will never quite fit.

During the extensive interview, quite an achievement, we are reminded that Robbie has sold 40 million albums and won eight Brit awards.

Robbie explains it thus: “There are three things that go together to make up my success. I do something on TV performances that you don't get from other pop stars. There's the live thing, which people seem to really like. And then there's radio, which has been really, really fucking kind to me.”

Morrissey does the live thing but doesn't pander more than minimally to radio or TV. The Morrissey influence was, I also felt, strongly in the background for Robbie's recent quirky single, with its berserk video, and an insert from "The Specials" at the end. So is Morrissey more the top-quality wholesaler providing the substance that, with some unashamed marketing gloss, is what people really want? Already Robbie's new album is shaping up for mega-success. Oh well, enough said: lasting kudos to Moz, less the demon dosh!

club singers, is what Robbie is. He'll never be Moz, and you don't have to like him, but you can't deny that the lad has had some great pop moments. He's not one of those crappy 'talent' show chancers either, because he actually has the nounce to write some of his tunes and the stage presence to entertain an audience; he was probably the best thing at Live 8 for getting the crowd going ... and ok he was simply lucky to get his first break with the godawful Take That, but fair play to him for persevering with a solo career. Also, before he damaged his voice with the drink and drugs, his pipes were some of the best in the biz (you've only to listen to the amount of people murdering the overplayed 'Angels' to realise how hard it is to match his range).

His albums have never really done much for me, but one or two of the singles off his last effort were great pop songs. Don't discriminate just because someone is a commercially successful act ... fine if you don't like the songs, but I can't stand these snooty indie types who won't even spit on an act unless they have a fanbase of less than twenty anorak wearing, incontinent intellectuals who vomit in the presence of a radio ... A good tune is a good tune.

How dare Rob, a formerly manufactured pop act, be compared to our Moz, who loves everything obscure like, oh, the manufactured pop acts of Motown and Elvis.

This story is borrowed from the loveable lardarse's secret press conference, that occurred last month and was featured in the Telegraph. He basically barracked a select few journalists, who had incurred his wrath at some time, and made them read out their bad reviews of his previous work. The denouement was Robbie revealing that his new album would take him back to his musical roots, namely The Smiths and New Order, thanks to his new co-writer (read ghost writer) Steven Tin Tin Duffy. As someone who well remembers seeing Robbie on the Hitman and Her all those years ago, I was somewhat taken aback to hear of the long, proud musical lineage he has inherited. Perhaps, somewhere out there, are those Morrissey songs I must have missed; the immortal 'Self pitying coke head dance monkey gets lucky' or Ian Curtis's poignant 'Fat Stoke Boy on the Make'

Occasionally, RW drops out a decent song in a pleasant voice with a nice-enough melody. Of course he gets high marks for his image-makers and stylists (and tattooist). Last week RW performed on a Dutch TV-show. Having always had a soft spot for the lad (I mean he is gorgeous, funny, can actually sing and has made tremendous progress since his boyband-days) I was eager to watch. It was great. He was incredibly chatty, witty and played around with the (gay) host. He did two songs and I couldn't believe how "Morrissey-esque" he behaved. The posing, his dance, the remarks, even the quiff, jacket and jeans.
Make me pure sounds like large parts of it could've been written by Moz.

And what's the harm in that? Morrissey's in a league of his own, no doubt about it. So, Robbie's leaning towards it a tiny little bit. Bringing some of Moz's quality towards mainstream can only be appreciated. Robbie defenitely doesn't need to make the effort. He's so big people'll buy his CD's anyway. He could be bland, boring an thicker than pigshit if he wants to. He chooses not to.
                        I say cheers to him!
