The Angel of Covent Garden by Colin Bytheway was broadcast last night and is available on Listen again for one week on the BBC radio 4 site.

An offbeat gay love story set in central London the bittersweet tone is offset by some acerbic dashes of humour.

The piece features an older actress who puts up a young man who is new in town . Her favourite song is Moon River. The song becomes a motif of the play . The Play's young protagonist - who has left the North for the Big Smoke (Morrisseyesque theme) - buys her a present at one point , a version of the song by " some old Eighties' singer " that he has picked up in Berwick Street. As the credits roll at the end cue extract of Morrissey's version of said tune. Nice touch I thought.
