Last night, 05 Oct 2005, on HBO's comedy program ONE NIGHT STAND, stand-up comedian Omid Djalili, performed (episode ONE NIGHT STAND 62: OMID DJALILI).

Near the very end of the show, (last 5 minutes or so) Omid is commenting on his observations of Iranian men dancing at the disco (Omid is a British-born Iranian). He performs various parodies on men dancing at the disco. In one of his descriptions he says something to the effect of "this one is a cross of an Iranian man and Morrissey dancing", and then he a "dance about the stage imitating Morrissey on stage" where Morrissey waves his arms around and twisting and turning.

It was familiar of Morrissey's actions, but it was more interesting to hear Morrissey's name mentioned and the audience response to his "dance"; that they actually may have known who Morrissey was.

Omid Djalili's performance is on HBO on Demand through 20 Nov 2005. I checked the regular HBO schedule for him, but do not see this episode playing again this month.

Comedy taste is an individual thing, I am not endorsing this program or HBO, just informing of the Morrissey reference.

    Brilliant comic. (Score:0)
But I had to watch it again to see if he actually used Morrissey's name in his act. I found myself wondering what percentage of American audiences listening to his bit know just who the hell Morrissey is?
    My guess is under 40%.

The comic said something to the effect of some Iranian men turning into Morrissey when they dance.

Another comic mentions Morrissey... (Score:2, Informative)

Hey friends, I thought about submitting this as a news story when it happened, but ended up deciding against it. I'm not making fun of the posted HBO story. But here's another, much stranger mention of Morrissey by a singificantly lower-profile comic. This happened... ehhhh... around the beginning of August 2005, a little over a month before I moved out of Los Angeles.

My submitted news story title was going to be something like Sixth-Billed Comic at Highbrow Video Store Mentions Morrissey, but my internet was down for 2 days after I got back from the video store, and by then, the moment had passed...

Anyway, I was at Rocket Video in West Hollywood, on LaBrea, on a Saturday night at the beginning of last August, renting a huge stack of stuff and unexpectedly discovering that, for some reason, several comics were performing at the store that night. One comic, who was a large man with frizzy hair, ended his routine something like:

'Living in L.A. is so interesting because you see celebrities every day. For example, the other day I was walking down LaCienega, and I saw MORRISSEY. And he was, you know, looking all sad and mopey, and he was carrying a chicken. Under his arm. Under his arm, Morrissey was carrying a chicken. And I said to Morrissey, why are you carrying that chicken under your arm? What could Morrissey possibly be doing with a chicken? I went home and called up all my friends and told them about it. [pause] WAIT. There's something horribly wrong with this story. I don't have any FRIENDS!'

There was no laughter until the end. I don't think anyone even laughed at the mention of Morrissey's name. However, the comic who was on next, a woman, said of the Morrissey-chicken-nofriends comic, 'I find that guy strangely hot.'

Were any of you there? Anyway...

And that is one more reason why his name becomes even more dear to us - that name we thought of as an ancestor's, a legacy that hid somewhere in a forgoten cave, suddenly pops up, in the span of a few seconds from your car radio, only once in a 2004 November afternoon, and dissolving in these few seconds all that period of moldy smell of ancestry and amnesia the american and british media (?) impregnated this name with. His name to us means "I'm Back for You, the Bored One". Ok, I'm exagerating. But heartwise, it is something like that.

I know, I know . . . but doesn't your heart warm when Morrissey's name enters your ear unexpectedly? Whether His name is mentioned for some reason or a Morrissey song is played on the radio or in a supermarket (yes, it really did once happen), it actually does make me feel quite happy for the rest of the day, and I can quite understand the urge to tell people who would care about it.
