The Process of Pop Music, Poetry, and the Smiths with Joe Pernice - PopMatters
By Elisabeth Donnelly
[24.Aug.05] :. The songwriter stops his excessive work to talk about klezmer and sex.

Excerpt:

Currently, Pernice and an actor from New York are working on adapting Meat Is Murder for film. The idea behind the film is: "Let's do it ourselves, we're going to be writing it and shooting it. We're going to sell it. That's the next step. I'm going to write all the songs for it, it's just too perfect. Not the quality, but I own the book, I own any and all rights to the film, I have a record company. It just seems too right not to do." On the subject of whether the Smiths will stay in the film, Pernice adds, "I might change the angle of it. You might not hear any of the songs. Back then the Walkman was still pretty new, and you could always hear the tinny-ness of it. You could hear it through the phones, hear it through the foam."

Rip Off (Score:2, Interesting)
I've read this a couple of times and don't understand it. Pernice has written something called "Meat is Murder," obviously ripping off The Smiths. I can understand Fitzgerald taking the phrase "Tender is the Night," part of the ode but taking somebody elses title so directly seems very strange. Why would someone want to do that? He seems very territorial/proprietary about it too. Is it his way of flattering The Smiths?

Folks, I beseech you, if you havn't experienced The Pernice Brothers yet - WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
Get yourself to iTunes, or whatever your source for music is, and buy their entire catalog. The Smiths influence is everywhere but, best of all, there is simply great pop song writing there.
Sonicaly wonderful tunes and hooks that will have you hitting repeat constantly.
Joe Pernice shows, quite clearly, with his song writing, he is an avid fan.
I don't know much(anything)about this project but it seems clear to me he is paying homage.

Not only are The Pernice Brothers great, making beautiful and vivid music, they aren't hasbeens like Morrissey and his band of shit overweight musicians.

Joe Pernice's book is not a ripoff (my God Morrissey fans are stupid) it's an hommage. Joe Pernice has enough sense and taste to love The Smiths, rather than be a bootlicking Moz fan and wallow in his mediocity.

Please attempt to think before you post.

Very fascinating indeed. What is the synopsis of the film though? I hope it can convert the audience into vegeterianism...but it wouldn't be desirable if people ran away in panic from the movie theater during the climax of the film. We aready have enough of those gory plots, like "The Silence of the Lambs". Maybe it would be more appealing to film lambs jumping on a grassy hill, or a cow licking a person's face. Meat your Meet already did all the dirty work of the necessary evil of the opposite effects!

... why is that whenever someone even references The Smiths there are a thousand pathetic cries of "rip off" or similar? For a site which is actually dedicated to Morrissey and The Smiths, it seems like madness that people here are so critical of others actually liking The Smiths too.

For anyone actually interested, Joe Pernice is a singer/songwriter in Pernice Brothers, and has also released records under his own name, and under the monikers Scud Mountain Boys and Chappaquidick Skyline. He has an MA in creative writing, and was commissioned to write a book for the 33 1/3 series of books-based-on-classic-albums. His contribution to the series is a novella about growing up in the suburbs in the 80s, and falling in love with English indie rock at a time when everyone around him was listening to music for meatheads. It's a great tale of angst, sexual frustration and suicide, soundtracked by The Smiths' finest 39 minutes.

As a low-budget indie film, this could potentially be extremely good. Although I could just imagine a Hollywood studio thinking 'wow .. we could really shift some product by making the band INXS and renaming it "Need You Tonight" '. Let's hope it's done tastefully. (Although if Joe pernice has anything to do with it, I'm sure t will be.)
