Tonight on Channel 4, there was a programme about adverts which featured unknown songs and made them hits. One of them was about Coca-Cola, and one of the guests said "if Coca-Cola was a British brand their adverts would have The Smiths on them and people in Birmingham would be slitting their wrists." (or something along those lines). If I hear another ill-informed armchair pundit talking about The Smiths simply as being miserable I'll scream. Idiots!

post-script: im in the US and im wathcing the "music" channel Fuse (better than MTV but still...). Why cant people make good music?? but hey, Jay Z man...

    Not only is it a silly comment on the Smiths (whereas had he said the Manics or Radiohead, I'd understand), I fail to see why this wittiest of jocular wags was incapable of thinking that a fizzy pop advert of someone self-harming would actually sell pop.

    Gawd, these 100 Greatest shows... I mean, sometimes they're good (there was one recently which had Mr Marr on it. He was indoors, wearing sunglasses. Rock 'n' roll!), but those pundits are just rent-a-quote.

    "Oh yes, I remember Bagpuss. That miserable cat that looked like a big stripey jumper. Wow, Peter Fermin, bet kids who watched that cut their wrists."

    (and also... I find it rather distasteful how pundits will say flippant things about mental problems. Ho-ho, I'm jumping in front of a train!)

      That was the 100 greatest albums wasn't it? Yeah, he seemed very praising of Morrissey. He seems to love I Know It's Over doesn't he? Me too...
