Japanese popstress Utada Hikaru in Smiths T-shirt shocker!

For anyone stranded in the cultural backwater that is Japanese pop land, I found a great picture of Utada Hikaru (Japan's biggest musical bounder) in a Smith's T-shirt, and used it in a article I wrote for Slant Magazine.

The shock is that she would even know who the Smiths are, let alone appreciate them. Good picture though. Mozz as a manga character, anyone?

And I never got the time to pop along to see little Bastedo in that Jeffrey Archer play with Dirty Den an Eastbourne.

I had just got back from NYC (shopping at Century 21 ... so chic!) and couldn't make the Wednesday matinee performance.

However, on clearing customs and leaving Terminal 3 Heathrow, waiting by United Airlines Express Check-in fore my car to be brought back to me I spotted Ricky Gervais! Normally I would smile to myself and mention in a whisper to my travel companiona who I'd just seen. But is must have been the jet-lag because I shouted out "It's Ricky GERVAIS" to my friends. And one of my friends turned to me and said "Who?". He smiled at me and gave a thumbs up (probably praying that the encounter ended there... which it did).

I digress.... I notice that Japanese lady wearing RANK T-shirt. I could have got her a signed one!!

Errr, why? I hate to spoil any prejudice you may be carrying around, but people actually listed to The Smiths in Japan. Not to mention that Utada is also multinational. It constantly surprises me how people think The Smiths & Moz are somehow this amazingly kept secret that hardly anyone knows and is so difficult to discover.

She actually had some good tracks on her US debut last year. You should check it out.

She speaks english apparently quite well. If she is a fan, i'm sure she doesn't stay in Japan all of the time. So, you know, she prolly went to like, hot topic or something and saw the shirt of a band she likes.
Eigther that, or she was in america with a friend or two she has over here, one being that slutty fowl mouth brod....lil'kim. Whom she made a duet with. I have a cd full of songs from her. She has many covers of songs in english, none of which are anything but pop songs.
However, yeah, she is I guess the biggest thing in that country rite now. Probably because she's the most, non contemporary japanese singer out there. Her music is, pop and hip hop. At least as far as i've heard. And its not always in japanese or english. But both. She also, apparently thinks and has a style of her own where as, most japanese artists seem to have the same videos and the same current standard of style there.
But i dont know. I like her and all, but i'll believe the smiths tshirt, when i here a smiths cover. Even better, in japanese.

        whatever

what the fuck does tori anus know?
