NYC - NPR's program "Soundcheck" Thursday featured Vanity Fair editors David Kamp and Steven Daly, who recently co-authored "The Rock Snob's Dictionary: An Essential Lexicon of Rockological Knowledge
Several people, including myself, phoned in to ask if Morrissey and the Smiths had been included in the book. The authors explained that while the Smiths made the list, Morrissey had not because he was "a little too mainstream." They went on to say, however, that Morrissey had been inducted into the book's official "Rock Snobs Hall of Fame," himself an archetypal rock elitist, citing his reformation of the NY Dolls and reissuing of Jobriath.
They also said that Johnny Marr was included in the dictionary because he was the classic under-appreciated guitarist, who had been commissioned by a number of snob-worthy musicians since the Smiths, but whose subsequent projects had never amounted to much. He was likened to Bernard Butler in that regard.
T. Rex, Roxy Music and Eno were also topics of discussion, T. Rex being referred to as the "ultimate" rock snob band.
