Sanctuary held talks with potential buyers - Reuters
Fri Jun 3, 2005 07:51 AM BST

LONDON (Reuters) - Sanctuary Group, the music company which handles artists such as Morrissey and Iron Maiden, said on Friday it had held talks over a possible offer for the firm.

"The company confirms that there have been preliminary talks which may or may not lead to an offer or a further business opportunity", Sanctuary said in a statement.

"(It) notes that during the past 12 months, and indeed on a continuing basis, it has had exploratory discussions with a number of third parties about a wide range of future potential business development and investment opportunities", Sanctuary added.

Sanctuary shares closed at 43-1/2 pence on Thursday, giving the company a stock market value of around 160 million pounds.

A source familiar with the matter said Sanctuary had received several approaches from venture capital companies, including some based in the United States, and added that music industry companies could also be interested in Sanctuary.

Sanctuary's music catalogue has had recent album successes from English singer Morrissey and U.S. rock band The Strokes. Sanctuary also runs an artist management business, where its clients include heavy metal outfits Iron Maiden and Guns N' Roses.

Well, I really do wonder... (Score:0, Redundant)
I wonder if this had anything to do with Morrissey's 'anger' at Sanctuary?

Is it possible, nay, probable, that he was holding over a full commitment to the IOW based on this? When exactly what he wanted (whatever that may be, we will likely never know) didn't come to fruition, is that when he backed out?

Sanctuary didn't do exactly what Moz wanted, so what if he said, "You're going to sell the company to someone? You didn't consult me? What if these people won't cater to my every whim? Harumph, well, I'm not doing that silly little festival then. So there!"

Maybe not. But maybe, just maybe, so...

He's put himself about far too much this last year and he's afraid of boring people.

I would have put this comment under IOW chat but it will get more notice here!

Just imagine if the promoter announced that a percentage of the receipts from IOW would be donated to the Justice for Kirsty campaign. Morrissey's response ..... "well, that puts a completely different complexion on things. Will I play? .... No!".

My plain MOrrissey bust (Gary"Kiln Uncle" Seymour) has been turned to face the corner. He should be ashamed of himself! The other day I dragged him up and made him a Dorrissey!

Where IOW is concerned, Sanctuary have been too sanctimonious, and are surely the ones to apologise to just about everyone affected if they can be that big. Then all parties can close the chapter, spruce up and change underwear for a fresh upfront start! Well?

As an aside, I rarely get a chance to watch Top of the Pops but was well pleased to see Deano pounding away ‘to beat the band (!)’ with Good Charlotte this evening. They have the right stuff, they’re on their way. U2 also played outside the BBC studios, always reliable, and Coldplay – quite a beautiful song imho. Some good vibes then, even if A Marie appeared to do a whirl and I finally heard/saw the Crazy Frog song whose dance troop is quite fit at least.

Similar story in Saturdays Independent. The Independent does not cite Morrissey as a Top of the Bill Artist, these are:

      Sanctuary's most famous acts:
      Elton John
      Fleetwood Mac
      Beyoncé
      Destiny's Child
      Iron Maiden
      Motorhead

      Mmmmmmmm. Motorhead?

      Morrissey is mentioned though:
‘Its record business specialises in comeback acts and is behind recent revivals such as Morrissey's return to performing and recording’.

Personally, I was intrigued to find co-founder Andy Taylor was a ‘Larger than Life Geordie’. I wonder what that is as I have lived on the Tyne for years and never met one. Ah but I may have, as I don't know what one is?

Lucky for you, I only get two!
