While looking through band sites on MySpace I came across a band from Amherst, Ma. They have a not too bad cover of Bigmouth Strikes Again you can take a listen too. The page is at:

    Oh, I don't know.

I'm no fan of "post hardcore", but this is a version which captures the energy and attitude of the original without delivering the sort of pale copy that you usually get with covers. A good cover should bring something new to the song.

There aren't many good covers of Smiths songs, but this is one of them. The closer to the original the song is, the more pointless the cover is. Sometimes the cover is simply a version of the song with the personality of the singer stamped on it: not a bad thing in itself, and often quite a sweet tribute. Billy Bragg's "Jeanne" is a good example of that.

The really bad covers are those in which the tone of the cover and the style of the band is completely out of kilter with its model. For me, Placebo's highly rated cover of Bigmouth is an example of that.

frustrating not to be able to sing to it (Score:1)
I listened to this and did not like it.

I mean, Morrissey can be kind of unmelodic sometimes, but jesus, they actually brought it up a level by just yelling the lyrics instead of singing them.

See, I like covers that do something different, but I find it very frustrating when your favorite melody isnt sung. You are waiting for it, wanting to sing along, and then they DONT sing it. Its maddening.

I saw a band cover "Panic" once, and they did everything right except they changed the melody of ONE line...they didnt sing it the way Morrissey sang it, and I just thought "well thats the best part of the song..." I wanted to sing along but they didnt let me.

I dont know I just like...dont see much talent in this cover...the musics Ok though...
