Thirty years after helping to found the archetypal British punk band the Sex Pistols, the guitarist Steve Jones has a new gig. From noon to 2 p.m. each weekday on Indie 103.1 FM in Los Angeles, Mr. Jones is the host of "Jonesy's Jukebox," an ecumenical mix of rock, from punk and metal to glam and shameless pop, interspersed with the ex-Pistol's cockney-accented musings. (The program streams live at www.indie1031.fm.). Speaking recently with Joel Topcik, Mr. Jones discussed what he's listening to and why.

Morrissey

I'm a huge Morrissey/Smiths fan. I made an attempt to write with him a couple years ago, but he never called me back. I ran into him a year later - the Pistols were doing a show and he came backstage - and the first thing he says is: "I'm sorry, Steve, I didn't call you. I was shy." Then the next year this fantastic album comes out, "You Are the Quarry" (Sanctuary). I love the way it's produced, and he's in top form. I liked the first single, "Irish Blood, English Heart," but the song that really captured me was "First of the Gang to Die." I started playing it a lot on my show, and they picked that to be the second single. So when he played at the Universal Amphitheater, he made a big fuss in between songs and gave "Jonesy's Jukebox" a big shout out for being the first to play his album and being supportive of him. It was really touching.

I like the rockabilly lads but I'd love to see our boy work with someone from a more hardcore scene.
I'm surprised he's not already worked with one of his most influential musicians like Patti Smith or David Johanson from The NY Dolls.

I'd pay a lot of money to hear that!

i'm delighted to hear jones likes moz. i have friends who worship the pistols and who think moz is just the worst thing ever in history - they will be appalled!! ha ha ha ha ha...

sadly they're a bit limited in their worldview -whereas i have always seen a pistols-smiths/moz-rotten link. moz is the direct descendent of rotten, using pop music to subvert the culture, saying the unsayable in interviews etc

and among the options currently discussed on this site for moz's next collaboration i think jones is by far the most intriguing. i saw the pistols in 2002 and jones' playing sounded massive. of course he is also physically massive. but let's face it boz is a big fat pig these days, and alain (should he ever return) is pretty large, and even moz will not be his former svelte self again.

so bring on the fat pistol and get him in ver studio with morrissey PLEASE. if only just for one song. i don't mind if it's a cover - it could be amazing

When do people finally realize, that the SEX PISTOLS were one of the most overrated bands of all time. They were nothing but a bunch of tramps, that happened to be around at a certain time in musical history, which makes them appear to have been bold, daring and influential. None of them could play their instrument to save their lives. The only credit they get in my book, is to have played Manchester back then, which made parts of the audience form bands themselves and instead of Johnny Rotten & Co. having indeed a profound influence on the music world.

Johnny Rotten wrote one of the strongest sets of lyrics of all time when he delivered 'Nevermind the bollocks'. Listen to that album and then remind yourself that Johnny was just nineteen years old and the achievement suddenly becomes almost unrivalled.

I still think that 'God save the Queen' is the freshest, most relevant single of all time. but the subject of 'Holidays in the sun' just knocks you out.

As frontmen go, Johnny is in the top bracket along with Morrissey. When anybody tries to imitate either of these two, they fail miserably.

As the years pass by and the bands getting record deals become more and more mundane The Smiths, Morrissey and Sex Pistols become increasingly revered.

Steve Jones could just be the guitarist that Morrissey requires to put the hugely pleasing and successful 'Quarry' to bed and to "turn the page" again.

However, I remember and continually witness how the excellent 'Southpaw' is almost disowned by a massive percentage of Morrissey fans, so the question is, 'Will Moz take the risk'? I would say not.

The solution could be a very limited edition ep.
