There could possibly be a song by Morrissey and a song by Johnny Marr & the Healers. That is really the best they could hope for. The Smiths is Dead. Viva le Future !

I don't know if this going to be possible because I heard a rumor -- and mind you just a rumor -- that the Smiths are going to break up. I don't want all the fans to freak out, but my inside sources tell me that Marr is way tired of Morrissey's overdemanding personality and would much rather just spend a holiday with the new wife in the Carribean. It's hard for me to imagine too: we all *know* Morrissey could never survive without Marr. Well hopefully this is just silly rumor and we'll get great Smiths albums all the way to the Millennium! (And a Joy Division cover to boot)

It's curious how Morrissey,throughout his entire career,has very rarely mentioned Ian Curtis given that they are possibly(with Mark E Smith) Manchester's two lyrical giants-plus the shared miserablist tag.They wrote about the same locale of roughly the same period,in different but brilliant ways.It would seem Morrissey wasn't a particularly keen fan at the time,and isn't a man to change his tastes too often.Or maybe it's a tacit sign of respect,the dead Curtis being his only rival as Manchester's greatest frontman.

I wonder how they did this "approaching" since they have been disbanded since '87, is it? Perhaps this is "old" news.

Maybe it was some different "Smiths"...there is this family down the road from me named Smith. Maybe it was them.

Call me Mrs. Cleo. This will happen. Mark my words. Better yet, tattoo them.
The Smiths will reunite however that will not include Mr. Joyce or Mr. Rourke (although the jury is still out on Rourke). As Morrissey and Marr were responsible for the Smiths output I think it is acceptable and understandable that they could reunite and call themselves the Smiths. In fact if you read into the interviews around the time Moz was defending himself in the courts you will find information to back this up. Marr was the songwriter (and muse?) and Morrissey the poet. I don't think many people dispute that.
So let me ask you this.....
If you had a chance to go see a show billed as "The Smiths" and it consisted of Morrissey, Marr, Gary Day and Deano with Boz filling in all the layers of guitars Johnny used to have a tape back up live.....would you go? I would.
Here's another question. Knowing this would have to be planned years in advance and knowing Marr slipped up and said it during an interview himself is there really any question? Now add Alain leaving upon finding this out to the mix and the big picture comes into focus.
In a world of declining record profits the cash comes from the live shows. They would have been offered millions to do a run of stadiums. Get ready.

I posted the story,naively forgetting that it would probably spawn another endless,pointless debate about a Smiths reformation-which it has.Surely it's a given that the Smiths won't be reforming,especially with the sole purpose of covering a song by another band.Obviously, saying "The Smiths" rather than The Smiths wasn't enough.As originally suggested,it's probably Johnny Marr we're talking about here,but I forgot-this is a Morrissey site isn't it,no point talking about Marr's career!I thought maybe people would discuss,in the cold light of day,whether Marr or,less likely Morrissey might cover a Joy Division song etc etc.Oh I forgot again-that would mean mentioning another band entirely wouldn't it?What a ridiculous thought!Little matter that Joy Division are at least as important and influential as The Smiths.P.s I'm a hardcore(but not witless)Smiths fan of 18 years standing-but as a lover of good music generally I thought this story might be interesting because these two bands share a considerable fan base.Music lovers only need reply.

Here goes...
1. Marr did use backing tapes on many occasions to replicate a third or fourth layer of guitars. They were him playing it and parts technically impossible to create with a single support guitarist. They were not lead parts but effects lines. This is a fact guys. I am not saying he cheated anything in any way. He is brilliant and sometimes being brilliant can add a significant complexity to ones creative output. Johnny Marr wrote very complex music.
2. Don't kill the messenger and say I am high (which I am) as an insult. I am merely asking you to look at the facts. As I said Johnny admitted this live in an audio interview that the majority of people from this site heard. He said it himself. Unintentionaly I suspect but perhaps as a pre-marketing bid for the reunion.
3. I never said Joyce and Rourke were not great musicians. What I said was they did not contribute to the Smiths as far as writing music or lyrics. Johnny Marr was the creator of the music the Smiths output which Morrissey wrote to. What I am stating is that Rourke and Joyce had almost zero creative input in the writing process. They were very good live as they should be expected to have been...they are long term session musicians. Very talented ones but not ones crafting the sound of the Smiths that's for sure.

Read what I wrote again and if you intend to post please at least attempt to counter one of my claims. I am going to get a nice "I told you so" from all of this.
