Live At Earls Court finds British rock icon Morrissey and his band performing in London at the end of the You Are the Quarry tour. Not to be confused with the DVD Who Put the "M" in Manchester? recorded at the beginning of the tour in May, Live at Earls Court is a completely different concert from December 2004 and features a vastly different set list. While past live Morrissey albums such as Beethoven Was Deaf featured the singer's penchant for beautifully ragged ersatz rockabilly, Earls Court showcases the more polished group sound developed out of the You are the Quarry sessions. Which isn't to say that Morrissey has lost his edge, on the contrary such songs as "I Have Forgiven Jesus" and "The World Is Full of Crashing Bores" prove his legendary wit and sardonic tongue are fully intact and as sharp as ever. Similarly, his burnished baritone vocals have arguably never sounded better and the lush, muscular band arrangements frame him with a glam-regality befitting his late-career resurgence. Although newer songs off You Are the Quarry are the focus, longtime Moz fans will be delighted at the amount of The Smiths songs included here. In fact, the mix of the old, the new and the unexpected -- he also performs some rare b-sides -- make Live At Earls Court one of the most successful albums of Morrissey's career.

      on the play.com website there is two versions of the Earls Court CD, one that is 8.99 and another which is apparently a 'Limited edition digi-pack' which is 11.99. Anyone have any further details on what is on this 'special edition'as the track listing is exactly the same.

          How on earth can they say this is the most successful release of Morrisseys career. It's not even out yet and besides I have better Boots from the Quarry tour, not to include There Is A Light as an encore is criminal in the first place.

            They mean it's one of the most well put together music packages Morrissey has ever put together... Satisfying from beginning to end. Every review will always be from one critics perception. Also "There is a Light" is getting too much exposure considering how much weaker his version is compared to the original. This is a very enthusiastic review and would make casual listeners VERY interested. Is allmusic.com above Payoffs ???

            now, ive listened the album through and while it is pretty good and has moments of sheer brilliance, it is certainly not perfect. it at least does not compare to what are actually Morrissey's most successful albums, 'Your Arsenal' and 'Vauxhall And I'- not even close.

            when compared amongst his other live albums, The Smiths' 'Rank' and his own 'Beethoven Was Deaf', it stacks up very well, but then that doesnt necessarily say too much. neither of these albums hav ever successfully captured the live experience or atmosphere and 'Live At Earl's Court' is no different. perhaps this is becos the live Morrissey experience is so co-dependent on the visual aspect of watching Moz whip the mic cord, wrtihe around on the stage and gesture toward his beloved fans that a mere audio cd is simply not up to the task.

            with an arguably more satisfying setlist, isuspect the 'Who Put The 'M' In 'Manchester'?' dvd release will be the better of the two releases.
