Guardian Hay festival turns to film - The Guardian

The Guardian Hay Festival this summer is to offer film events as well as the usual banquets of literature, comedy, cabaret, politics, art, music and children's entertainment.

...The 10-day programme has further extended its colonisation of the grounds of Hay castle - which already boasts the biggest marquee in Wales - by booking Elvis Costello and Morrissey and introducing a state-of-the-art cinema, thanks to sponsorship by Film Four and Arts and Business.

Ryan also notes:

No confirmation on the festival site yet, but it really would be wonderful if true. Hay-on-Wye is such a interesting and beautiful town and the festival has become one of the UK's greatest literary events.

      Moz is above firing back at Costello. And that's saying alot.

          I now exactly what is going to follow this comment but I am going to make it anyway;

          I went to see Elvis Costello this week and it was a real eye opener.

          For years I have gone along and watched my local football team and every now and then they have produced a player who I have thought of as being real quality. Then I have tuned in to watch the Champions League and seen the Ronaldos and Zidanes of the world and realised the true level of my own "hero".

          Much as this pains me that is exactly how I felt while I was watching Costello...he was Champions League where Morrissey, certainly on the last tour, was First Division and certainly nowhere near Costello.

          Costello played for 2 1/2 hours...drawing songs from across his back catalogue which was rich and diverse in style. His band were beyond competent and were tight and cohesive. The performance from Costello himself was inspiring...his vocals alone were simply devastating. I hadn't ever seen a performance to match it.

          Before the concert I didn't own a Costello record and in 5 days I have purchased 10...which still leaves me with 11 to find the funds for!

          In terms of meaning and attachment nobody will ever touch Morrissey...he "means" something to me but I have to be honest and say that as a performer he cannot touch Costello.

          Sorry everyone.

          I can't help the way I feel.
