OK, but do you love it enough to buy its accompanying singles, the gatefold-case version with additional DVD footage, and the super Deluxe Edition Quarry in comic-book-embossed silver featuring nine B-sides and live DVD footage you'd already bought? Get ready to bend over again because "I Have Forgiven Jesus" has now been released as a two-part CD single, and that irascible Moz had the gall to put a worthy and engaging track on each.

"No One Can Hold a Candle to You" is the clear winner from this fresh batch of rarities. The song opens with a buoyant guitar line that sounds more like a Johnny Marr jangle than the work of a polished studio hand, and its chorus is crammed with flourishes of piano and strings big enough to support lyrics like "No one can hold a candle to you, when it comes down to virtue and truth." This track is all chorus-- three of them, in fact, with only one verse to speak of. Maybe that's why it's a B-side. Still, because of the immediate pull of the tune, it took me several listens to notice its repetitive composition and when, at the song's close, Morrissey reaches those high notes that evaded him even on Quarry, it feels complete. This is the second time in the past year Morrissey has surprised me and demanded my attention-- and my goddamned cash. [Jason Crock]

        Oh yes... "Candle..." is a masterpeice, a knockout, a heartbreaker, a moment of grace... Worth every penny - and more...

        Moz has always given us great b-sides... That's part of his genius...

          this guy is writing like he thinks Moz wrote the song

          and what the heck is he talking about when he says Moz hit high notes that evaded him on Quary??? I could list a handful of examples where Moz goes higher...what scale was he refering to??

          Sorry for the rant I love Candle but I hate jackass writers/reviewers

          I think the Slum Mums and The Public Image are hella good too....Can you believe there were this many quality songs produced with the Quarry sessions..and some of the B-Sides are arguably better than a couple of the album tracks. Morrissey, you are a God.

            but yes, it does sound like he is not aware that it wasn't written by moz. i think morrissey's vocals on "candle" are so remarkable and there is such earnestness in his voice. happy that pitchfork recognizes the quality of this song as well as the relevance all morrissey's b-sides.

              Yes, it is an absolutely fantastic song *the* best b-side off of YATQ, and yes, more importantly - Pitchfork totally friggin' bonked on that review not picking up that it was a cover. Uhm, hey guys? This is why I oughta be writing for 'em, eh? Though every writer is guilty of a factual mishap at one point or another, the fella cheesed this one up pretty badly. hope i'm not giving myself bad karma by mentioning it, though...

                This reviewer has no idea this song is a cover.

                I don't think such an ignorant review is worthy of making the news page, any more so than cutting and pasting messages from the general message board would be.
