TWO singers from two legendary Manchester acts were picked out as the winners of ManchesterOnline's 2004 music poll by hundreds of our users - Morrissey and Mark Owen.

Former Smiths singer Morrissey capped a knockout year by winning our album of the year poll for his comeback effort You Are The Quarry. Moz edged out competition from former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown’s latest LP Solarized and decks’n’ double bass duo Fingathing’s Big Red Nebula Band.

AFTER seven years out of the limelight, Morrissey returned in 2004 with two stunning hometown shows, four top ten singles and an almost universally-acclaimed seventh solo album.

So it’s little surprise that the former Smiths frontman topped ManchesterOnline’s album of the year poll with You Are The Quarry, which received four times more votes than its nearest challengers.

The full top ten was as follows:

1 MORRISSEY – YOU ARE THE QUARRY
2 Ian Brown – Solarized
3 Fingathing – Big Red Nebula Band
4 The Charlatans – Up At The Lake
5 Badly Drawn Boy – One Plus One Is One
6 Hilton – Not Afraid To Be Happy
7 Stephen Fretwell – Magpie
8 The Fall – Interim
9 The Earlies – These Were The Earlies

I cant believe that, Ian Brown is so under-rated! I think he is great, and a collaboration with Noel Gallagher too, brilliant!

Fingathing – Big Red Nebula Band is an excellent album I'd reccomend it to anyone. Solarized is pretty good but his previous three albums are better. haven't got a clue how Morrissey managed to win this.
