U2 on Morrissey/The Smiths

An anonymous person writes:

In 'The Irish Times', December 23, Bono and Larry had the following to say about Morrissey and The Smiths (link):

Q: Morrissey - good or great?

Bono: I remember hearing How Soon Is Now for the first time. You can always tell a truly great song when you can't speak after you've heard it, you have to pull over your car for fear of crashing. Edge was an immediate Smiths fan, right from This Charming Man, and I got into him as a humorist. I remember us playing Manchester Poly, way back, and he was around. He's certainly a lot more interesting than the indie stable he came from. I loathed that scene. But Morrissey - he's like Oscar Wilde in a Ford Escort.

That indie scene he came from - it was a bunch of lies sold to people and it made our life a lot less interesting and a lot more lonely, even just in terms of who we were sharing hotels with. All those bands that were broken up by that "cultural revolution" - they're not there any more. It was a "cultural revolution" disguised by words such as "street cred". This is the lexicon of what we lived through during the 1980s, the excuses used for not having a good song. It was mesmerising, really mesmerising. We were smart enough to go to America and bypass that. We took a few blows for that; a few connected. That scene was bananas, it really was. It broke up The Smiths, broke up The Clash, stopped a band called Echo and the Bunnymen. And then it moved to Seattle - Kurt Cobain - another five minutes and he would have been out of that scene.

Q: It's Morrissey's proud claim that The Smiths are more Irish than U2 (seven out of the eight Smiths' parents are Irish - more than U2).

Bono: The Beatles are more Irish than U2!

Larry: But you see we thought of this back in the 1970s when we formed. We were always a forward-looking band and we were thinking about this new pluralistic Ireland!

Bono: But is there a Presbyterian in The Smiths? We have the Edge, who is Methodist blood, Presbyterian heart.

Bono is a huge Smiths and Moz fan. His reference (for those of us willing to read the thought he was conveying) is that the early 80's UK scene was fake, plastic and empty...commercial if you will...and Morrissey was able to be the exception.
Don't forget that in the early 80's there was more similarity between the Smiths and U2 than differences. Early U2 is in my opinion very 'indie' sounding and also very good. They shared a fan base. The mature U2 popsters you know now were a very different animal in the early days.
During the UK Smiths special last year they had a few clips of Bono in it and he was very flattering. I think that says a lot. Bono doesn't have to say anything about anything if he doesn't want to. No matter what you think of him he is a very successful artist who has now gone out of his way multiple times to make positive comments about Morrissey's credibility. U2 get a lot of press and I am positive that thousands of people who don't know the Smiths or Moz will read that and get turned on to him. That is a good thing. Imagine if you never heard Moz for the first time. Plus so far I dig the new U2 album and haven't really liked anything of theirs since Achtung Baby.
Anyway.... I am going on but that's my 2 cents and that's all I have left in a George Bush economy.

Why doesn't he pour his money into something THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERNCE? Like a recount in Ohio or why didn't he go to IRaq as a human shield or at least do something other than announce your disapproval. Or tell people out there about the cover-up of Sept 11 - Did you know that 8 of the named Arab hijakers are in fact alive and there were 2 Mossad agents on board. No video from airports and surrounding areas have been released. The black boxes have been found but a fireman has been silenced about it. So come on Bono do something worthwhile instead of sucking your own cock. P.s. the latest single is really lame. How old are those guys anyways?

[World News]: Washington, Dec 26 : Irish rocker Bono thinks America is the most culturally inspiring nation in the world and also says that to him it is the best place to be in.

The "U2" frontman gets angry when he hears other musicians complaining about having to travel to the States and performing there.

"Waking up in Memphis, Tennessee, where Stax was born, or where Elvis Presley cut Mystery Train or where Martin Luther King was shot dead is not crap," rate the music quoted him as saying.

"America is just full of possibilities. Nobody buys their cars anymore so it gets angry and Eminem happens, one of the great writers of the age comes out of Detroit," he added. (ANI)

Perhaps this will incite U2 fans to burn their U2 records and go out and buy something decent and more wonderfully political like the Sex Pistols, Clash, or the Smiths?

Most fans of this indie stuff are also usually blinkered to anything else such as hip hop, electro, metal, etc. (not all, but the vast majority). In simple, "indie" is fucking crap, that's why U2 are millionaires and Kingmaker aren't. Moz and Marr didn't want to be obscure indie, they wanted mainstream on their own terms.

The thing is (besides I don't like the last two u2 albums) I had enough of Bono popping out of everywhere I looked. You have him in the news, in the papers, in the United Nations meetings, and soon I bet there'll be a photo of he's face on the toilet paper with a little bubble (like the ones on comics) saying: "After you wipe your @$$, dump the paper in a recycling bin. Help the world!" or stuff like that.
